Some rumblings that the Falcons want to trade back. They've also been connected with Bijan Robinson. They might be angling to trade back a few spots and take Robinson. I personally don't think that's a great option with the needs at OT and Edge as well as already having Allgeier. But if the Falcons are convinced none of the options at Edge and OT are worth a pick then doubling down on offense and trying to make that our calling card is defensible.

Agreed on the need at Edge but the Falcons already have a ton of money committed at OT and both Mathew’s and McGary were above average last year. I think it’s sensible to trade back.

If they trade back for Robinson that’s fine. If they take Robinson at 8, that’s concerning.

Yeah

I'm seeing mocks with them taking Smith at 8 and I don't like that either. If it's not wilson or someone like Carter or Anderson somehow fall, trading back or Gonzalez are the likely moves

McGary is a RT.

Matthews is 31. His contract means he's around for at least 2 more years. He's solid now but solid OTs tend to erode into backup quality OTs in their mid 30's. I'd say it's very likely he's well below average by the time the 2025 season rolls around.

We have a need for our next franchise LT. If we get him now he has 2 years to cut his teeth behind Matthews before taking over. Now is the time you get the replacement, not once your current LT needs replaced.

How many examples do we have of teams drafting OT’s in the top 10 with the intention of sitting them for a couple years?

I don't hate the idea of taking Skronski who can start LG now an d then move to LT later.

But I would prefer an edge.

Edge is definitely more of a need but I'm not sure there's one there that I'd take over the LTs that might be available when we pick.

I'm not super high on Skronski. He has T-Rex arms. He has a super high floor at guard but he might never be able to hold down tackle.

I'd rather take Paris Johnson. I like his mix of versatility and his ultimate fit at LT. I like Broderick Jones and think his ceiling is higher but Johnson is more likely to reach his ceiling.

I really wish we could trade up and get Anderson but that's not happening.

Pretty weak year at LT. None of the top guys would likely be top 20 picks in most of the last 5-6 drafts. Hell there isn't even a consensus on who the top LT is.

If you're wanting to groom a LT for a couple years, you take him in the 2nd or 3rd round, not in the 1st.

Yup. Pretty sure the answer to my question is zero.

First of all 1st rounders are salary cap expensive. Of course if they hit, they are a huge bargain. They become really expensive once you get to the 5th year option.

So you sit your future LT for two years and you make them a very expensive backup. After two years, you deem them ready but at that point you only have one season to decide if they’ll be worth picking up the 5th year option since that decision has to be made before the 4th season.

If you really are in love with one of the OT’s then by all means pick one and trade Mathews or McGary.

Falcons need the 4 qbs to go before they pick and hope someone reaches before them.

Would love to land one of the blue chip guys but they need help from other teams reaching.

Robinson wouldn't be the worst pick (he's the top RB PFF has graded since 2014), after all they passed on Gurley for Vic freakin Beasely. I am not at all convinced Wilson isn't just a flash in the pan. The size is great to drool on, but I'm not sure he's a top 10 pick.

Vic Beasley was an awesome pick at that time. Classic example why evaluating this stuff in the moment is a waste of time.

I've seen MOcks having Wilson going before Anderson, could all be smoke but lots of guys are saying some people rate him close to Anderson and wouldn't be shocked to see him go first.

I mean here's my wishlist.

1. Anderson
2. Carter
3. Wilson
4. Trade back and get BIjan, Smith, Johnson, or Murphy.

Will any of that happen? Who knows.

Anderson is at the top of my wish list as well. He fits our needs perfectly.

Texans will dictate who is available to the Falcons. If they decide to go Anderson/Carter/Wilson at 2, then Atl will likely go Nolan Smith, Devon Witherspoon/Christian Gonzalez, or Bijan Robinson, imo. Or trade down, possibly with the Titans if Stroud remains available at 8.

If Stroud is there at 8, Falcons and Titans swapping picks makes almost too much sense. Falcons get some more draft resources and the Titans get the guy they want without risk of someone trading up to snag him. I feel like the Titans will trade up to Oakland's spot though if he's on the board or Detroits if both Anderson and Carter are off the board.

If Stroud is there at 8 it might test the Falcons resolve in sticking with Ridder. If TF passes on Stroud, Ridder bombs, and Stroud goes on to become elite, that would probably cost TF his job. Drafting a dud QB high and missing on an elite QB high are two of the fastest ways to get fired.

For sure, there's a better than even odds that if Stroud is there taking him or passing him will be a defining choice for Fontenot. If they take him and he fails Fontenot is fired. If he passes on him and he's elite it's a huge uphill climb for him.
