REAL FOOTBALL Thread

Niners have just had bad run blocking this year. Normally he's more of a 4-5 yards every play kind of back but this year he's had defenders in the backfield on him a lot. Either way when you look at yards per carry, the elite guys normally have a pretty high number. If you're just going off yards, I'll take a guy that needs 3 or 4 less carries per game to get them than the next guy. That's an extra 3 or 4 plays your offense does or does not need depending on how the team is scoring. And yeah man 3 yards per carry is terrible. Trent Richardson's 2.9ypc this year is legendarily bad. Especially considering Donald Brown is getting 5.6 and it's not like he's just getting a couple carries a game.

Gore is supposed to likely slow down but the one thing he has going for him is that he's never been fast anyway. His main strength has always been his vision and until that goes, he should get 1,000 yards for the next couple seasons unless the team lets him go or Lattimore comes on strong.

Y/C doesn't matter it's not a bad quick check but it is not a means of judging efficiency or anything else. Lets throw up a hypothetical scenario.

Runner X has 5 carries for 100 yards, all his carries come on 3rd and 25 and he didn't pick up a single first down.

Runner Y has 30 carries for 100 yards but all of his carries picked up first downs.

Runner X picks up more Y/C and they have the same number of total yards, but did they provide the same value to their team? No.

I get what you're saying there but we're talking about guys with 10 years of rushing the ball here. We're not talking about small sample sizes. It's not like Frank Gore made a career out of getting 15 yard runs on 3rd and 25 while a guy like Portis made a career out of converting 3rd and 3 situations.

These guys all get their fair share of 3rd and 25 draw plays as well as short yardage TD situations. Some guys might get slightly more than others but in the end it basically averages out with everyone. Gore has never been an explosive playmaker. He's ran on stacked boxes most of his career because the Niners havent had a passing game. There's been a ton of situations where he's busted off a 40 yard run and gotten caught from behind. A guy like Chris Johnson would have taken those to the house easily and turned them into a 70 yard run. But the thing is, Gore's YPC is still higher than all those guys because Gore was getting 4 yards most every carry in the trenches while guys like Johnson are getting stuffed for a 1 yard gain. Gore is moving the chains all game while Johnson is waiting for that one big run. Power runners like Gore are supposed to have a lower YPC average because of the way they run and the way the offense uses them. Yet somehow he still averages more than most any back in the game because he's that damn good at making something out of nothing.

Gore's Success% and rank by season

2005 -45% 18th
2006 - 47% 15th
2007 - 42% 39th
2008 - -47% 20th
2009 - 42% 41st
2010 - 48% 15th
2011 - 42% 45th
2012 - 48% 12th
2013 - 41% 44th.

What those numbers basically mean are the number of runs he makes that are successful and where he is in the league. A sucessful run is geting 40% of your needed yards on first down, 60% on second down, and all on 3rd or 4th.

That alone says gore wasn't moving the ball all game. Some years he did, others he didn't. It's hardly cut and dry like you make it out to be. Of course that's just one factor. Certain runs alos have added benefit.

Most of you know that I did a three round mock draft on the old site. I'll do it again here. Just because I feel like it, here's a taste:

1. Texans: Teddy Bridgewater (QB/Louisville)
2. Rams: Anthony Barr (OLB/UCLA)
3. Jaguars: Jake Matthews (OT/Texas A&M)
4. Browns: Derek Carr (QB/Fresno State)
5. Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney (DE/South Carolina)
6. Falcons: Cyrus Kouandjio (OT/Alabama)
7. Buccaneers: Stephon Tuitt (DE/Notre Dame)
8. Vikings: Johnny Manziel (QB/Texas A&M)
9. Titans: C.J. Mosley (ILB/Alabama)
10. Bills: Sammy Watkins (WR/Clemson)
11. Giants: Darqueze Dennard (CB/Michigan State)
12. Lions: Mike Evans (WR/Texas A&M)
13. Steelers: Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (CB/Oregon)
14. Jets: Eric Ebron (TE/North Carolina)
15. Rams: Khalil Mack (OLB/Buffalo)
16. Packers: Marquise Lee (WR/USC)
17. Cowboys: RaShede Hageman (DT/Minnesota)
18. Ravens: Taylor Lewan (OT/Michigan)
19. Chargers: Trent Murphy (DE/Stanford)
20. Cardinals: Cameron Erving (OT/Florida State)
21. Bears: Haha Clinton-Dix (FS/Alabama)
22. Dolphins: David Yankey (OG/Stanford)
23. Eagles: Rya Shazier (OLB/Ohio State)
24. Browns: Cyril Richardson (OG/Baylor)
25. Bengals: Justin Gilbert (CB/Oklahoma State)
26. Saints: Cedric Ogbuehi (OT/Texas A&M)
27. Chiefs: Jace Amaro (TE/Texas Tech)
28. 49ers: Louis Nix (DT/Notre Dame)
29. Patriots: Allen Robinson (WR/Penn State)
30. Panthers: Jason Verret (CB/TCU)
31. Broncos: Travis Swanson (C/Arkansas)
32. Seahawks: Kony Ealy (DE/Missouri)

I think the 49ers are happy with the defensive line depths right now. IMO, they are going either CB/S/WR with their first round pick.

Yeah Ted Thompson definitely loves his USC guys but I see the Packers going after a TE to replace Jermichael Finley, or maybe the D line since we have a bunch of defensive players up for free agency next year.

I think it would be a mistake to take Carr at 4 for the Browns.
Bridgewater has to go #1, I think.
The Packers with Rodgers are top 1-3 team in the NFC...that alone just makes him the best to me. They go from elite to very average.

Cant you say the same about most teams with a top 10 QB?

Would be boned.

Browns have to take a QB, they have no choice. I'd say the same thing with the Raiders. Both teams desperately need a QB and either would be wise to stretch or to trade out. Hopefully the Falcons get some stuff to work out for them and they can slide to 4 or 5.

I agree, just don't see Carr as value at 4. He's too risky to be that high a pick.

Looks like Rodgers is going to be cleared.

Lot of twitter reports, and he took all the first team reps in practice.

:YDS:

This sets up a potential first round matchup of Packers/Niners. Wow, in GB with Rodgers back that could be the game of the playoffs.
