REAL FOOTBALL Thread

I stopped reading when you said dorsey was at best average. You must not have any clue how good he was last year. Luckily Ian Williams is a beast as well.

Haven't the 49ers lost like every CB they had?
The Falcons just aren't that good, healthy or not.

It's not even worth it to list them all. 49ers have been devastated this year with injuries to quality players....not the scrubs the Falcons have lost.

Soooo amazing

You make it sound like you're missing the best player. Dorsey isn't that good. In the world of 3-4 NT. Generally you go from really good to just a fatty who takes up space. What makes a more successful 3-4 is typically your ends. They're the ones who set the position on the line. The idea behind a NT is someone who's fat who if they're good plug up one of the A gaps and take a guard and center to cover him freeing up the second level LBs to make a play. Dorsey looked good because he had Willis and Bowman behind him. You could put me at NT with them behind me and I wouldn't look half bad.

No, they had a few weeks without them, Cook IIRC is the only one out for the year.

Even at that, of all the positions on the field, the easiest to cover up is corner back. The best CB in the NFL can't cover forever, great pass rush can cover coverage deficiencies. I would take losing all my corners over losing all my centers and pretty much all my offensive tackles. Thankfully for the Falcons, Carimi has looked solid in his replacement. Unfortunately for the Falcons they have to deal with Matthews' growing pains at LT when they wanted him to learn at RT with Baker manning LT for a year or 2 to ease Matthews in.

Dorsey was a big blow to the team and would have been felt more if not for Ian Williams. Yet another reason why Baalke is one of the best in the business. To deny the type of year that Dorsey had last year is just being purposely stupid. Congratulations.

Again, your offensive lineman that you lost were average at best players. The 49ers have played many games without Anthony Davis this year as well as Iupati. Those two are by far better than anything you've lost.

Also, they lost Brock for a good portion of the season and he was one of the best CB's in the league last year.

Again, you are crying about average players. THe 49ers are losing actual good players.

They were average players, but to us that matters a LOT. Ryan only needs average OL, not street level FA's. You just can't stock that many good OL on one team. We tried to get the best of whats left. We have to draft heavy on the lines.

Solai has been pretty mediocre against the run, and so has Jackson our FA pickups. Just not much panning out. We can't draft a lineman to save our life. We miss pass on high upside later picks at the skill positions. We draft 9 safeties over the passed three years.

Off soapbox.

That argument is reasonable. Thank you for being a sane fan.

The Falcons have missed on round 1-3 linemen with Johnson (3), Holmes (3), Konz (2), Jerry (1), J Anderson (no 8 overall).

We aren't even talking replacement level production from them. Not league average, nothing. Bupkis. It is one thing not to just "hit" on one of these guys, but not even getting average to below average production? Thats just impressive in a bad way.

I noticed we aren't taking deep shots to Julio anymore. More slip screens and slants because Ryan has to get the ball out so fast. Brutal.

FWIW, I think Smith just wrote his own ticket out of town. GM Dimitroff probably as well... Owner is very unhappy.

Who should be out there that would be an upgrade on Mike Smith?

Didn't pretty much everyone know they were a good team? They won 10 games last year, afterall.

I mentioned that they were the 4th best team in football and I was laughed at by the usual suspects. They are now looking like it for sure along with the Broncos/Cowboys and well who knows anymore.

He should be...its really hard to be this bad with a good QB. Thats quite an accomplishment for your GM.

I think Shanahan has lost his luster, Cowher looks like he wants to stay retired, Gruden won't go anywhere without a franchise QB (Oh wait), most other coaches are in good standing or in the middle of deals. SF seems to want to run Harbaugh out on rails, so he could be in play.

I'm sure we could probably get Petrino back... lol

Harbaugh will go to a situation where he is given complete power. Not sure if Blank would want to do that but who knows. I think its less than 50/50 that Harbuagh is the 49ers coach next year which is really a shame because the team is loaded with young talent.

So how about those Cardinals which I said were a good team?

We both were saying that they were/are a good team. I am really surprised at how well they are playing with their injuries on the defensive side of the ball. What's impressive is that they are finding ways to win close games.

On the other side of it, the Eagles are vastly overrated. Their two losses have come against the west. Granted they were road games and had a chance to win it at the end each time.

I think Blank has too much input for that to happen.

I really think that loss in London the way it unraveled was the straw that broke the camels back. He won't be fired midseason, but its over Johnny. Blank is a very loyal guy, so it won't be easy. He had to right the ship this year. He most certainly did not.

It's hard to say who would be a better head coach. The usually suspects Cowher and Gruden are very comfortable on the set. Can't see either going anywhere anytime soon.

I could see somone handing Mike Gase (sp?) a head coach job. The biggest joke job in the league right now is being Denver's offensive coordinator.

Yeah, because we are NFC West fans and we know how good the Cards really were last year. They probalby win the division in 4 out of the 5 divisions last year and make noise in the playoffs. I just like to go back and see all the sarchastic comments I got when I said how good the Cards really were.
