Fields does not have a higher ceiling than either one. Fields is so far behind in QB development that it is almost impossible for him to catch up before his skills start to diminish. But unlike someone like Ridder or Zack Wilson who are also far behind in QB development, he is athletic enough to overcome those limitations right now. In 4-5 years when he is pushing 30, that probably won't be the case. Falcons have a decent window coming up if they can find a QB. Just because Fields is better than Ridder doesn't mean much. You guys need an established QB to fit with the offensive talent you have now.

Fields is the most physically gifted QB in the game. Elite athleticism, huge arm. If he could tap that he has a massively high ceiling. The likelihood of him reaching that ceiling is low but it's there.

I don't think Fields will ever process quickly enough to be an elite QB. But with sufficient talent around him and used correctly, he could be miles better than what he's been in Chicago.

The Falcons are in a bad spot. There aren't a lot of good choices for them. They're in no man's land for QBs in the draft and the options for QBs already in the league all have pretty big downsides. There just isn't a great option out there for them.

All the talent in the world doesn't mean jack if you don't have pocket presence or situational awareness, can't read a defense, or know where the open receiver is. All things he still struggles with in year 3.

Cousins is still playing at a high level. Wilson was also extremely efficient. Both would be massive upgrades to a Falcons team with a lot of talent at the skill positions. But honestly, the Falcons should have a shot a one of the top 4 Qbs in the draft if they wanted to go that route.

The hope with a team getting Fields is that they could tap more of his potential with better coaching and better talent around him. If you could just tap some of his potential you'd still have a pretty good QB. I think Fields would be an entirely different player if the Falcons had picked him and sat him behind Ryan for a year or two.

Cousins is coming off an Achilles injury. Young players often struggle to come back from that injury. At 35 it's even harder. So he's a pretty big risk. Wilson is still decent but he's clearly in decline. He could be fine next year or he could collapse. He's not an insignificant risk. So those guys aren't terrific options.

If the Falcons can get one of Williams, Maye, or Daniels, that would be ideal. I like Penix but not at 8. If the Bears decide to trade out of 1 then we could trade up but the cost of that will be enormous.

There really isn't a great option for the Falcons. Just lots of flawed ones.
 
Terrific options? Maybe not. They're significantly better options than Justin Fields though. If he didn't go to UGA for a year, I doubt you would feel the same way about Fields.

I would. Anyone who watches Fields can tell he has just absurd talent. I actually think his talent might be a double edged sword. He's so naturally gifted that he has never had to develop necessary skills. He's kind of like Mike Vick in that regard.

It's kind of a pick your poison. Do you bet on the under developed young talent? The aging but consistent veteran? Or do you mortgage the farm to trade up in the draft?

Yeah, it probably depends what their plan is for QB. Most rumored names are Russ, Fields, and Kirk. They have good pieces, so they'd be good, would also depend how much of NE's staff he'd bring with him.
 
Sounds like this is the last hoorah for Andy Reid. Will be interesting to see who they tab to replace him. I am guessing Nagy and Spagnuolo will have the inside track. They probably won't want to change too much.
