REAL FOOTBALL Thread

A Philly/Detroit NFCCG would be one for the ages. Might come down to who gets the 1 seed.

Philadelphia looked like a Super Bowl contender last night. Barkley has been amazing and the defense was all over the Rams. The Eagles and Lions are clearly a tier above everyone else in the NFC. Other teams could challenge them, but beating them would be an upset.

One thing that's true is the playoffs are wild. Realize all 3 losses the Eagles and Lions have are to the Falcons and Bucs. Which is wild.

Last year the Ravens were an all time talented team but got beat by the Chiefs.

One thing they have going for them though is most of the star QBs are in the other conference. Game changers like Lamar, Allen, Burrow or Mahomes. Goff is a great game manager. Hurts can be a game changer but he also has sucked. They teams who could be spicy in the playoffs IMO are the Cardinals and Commanders. They're the 2 teams that coudl have game breaking QBs. I think the sad part is most of the top NFC teams are teams with game manager QBs like the Lions, Vikings, and Seahawks.

And I'm not sold on Jordan Love. I could be wrong

Watching NFL stuff, man the game was **** compared to where it's at in recent years. Like pre-70s NFL is basically unwatchable. Old game swould be like "look at this amazing pass" when the QB throws a lame duck and a receiver just outjumps a CB and they lost their mind. REally the game back then was literally who could ram the ball down the other team's throat more effectively. With league getting more and more skillful over time hitting their stride IMO in the 90s.

Back then defenses were undersized and much slower than they are now. They had a hard time stopping the opposing running game. Earl Campbell could literally just run over people at will.

I don't think the Steelers' 70s Super Bowl teams could beat the Carolina Panthers. The quality of the game has changed that much.

I fully agree with you because the quality of player has gone up so much. I think if you took all the best players from the 70s and put them together they don't beat the Panthers more than like 3 times out of 10. Sure some would still play great, but like you said defense is just so much bigger and faster now. The linemen are so much more athletic now.

I don't think that's as true of the 80s on. I think some of the great teams from the 80s/90s would still get wins in the modern game because that's when the modern athlete type started showing up. Like Reggie White would still eat today. He may not be as amazing, but he'd still do well. Barry Sanders would still be great today. Jerry Rice would still be great today. etc. Anthony Munoz would still be a quality tackle. I dont' think Roosevelt Brown would be an elite OT in the modern game palying at 6'3 in the mid 200s. Even with modern lifting getting him to 300, but that would make him basically Jason Kelce. The only elite guys from that era who I think would struggle without some heavy changes are the big fatties. You just don't see strong unathletic fatties in the NFL anymore because speed matters. Like the Guards and Centers now are undersized tackles. Like they have mass but they're not Nate Newton or Tony Siragusa.

You also had a lot more 2 way players back then.

It is a different game. Heaviest players on the offensive line for Lombardi's 1960s Packers' dynasty were the two tackles who weighed 250 pounds. I was talking with my brother while we watched a bit of Lions/Bears today and placekickers get cut for not hitting FGs from 50+ yards. In earlier eras, no one tried FGs that long and accuracy on shorter kicks was spotty at best. There's just so much more speed on both sides of the ball now and players are bigger and are trained in fundamentals from an early age. Back in the 1960s, Olympic sprinter Bob Hayes was one of the world's fastest men and revolutionized the game to some extent with his speed, but he basically ran two routes and the QBs couldn't throw the ball as accurately on long passes as guys can now.

One thing that has to be remembered is that the regular-season roster was 40 guys in the 1960s, so there wasn't a lot of specialization. Placekickers often played a position as did punters.

A game that looked like neither team wanted to win but somehow the Giants wanted to win less. Overshown's tip/interception was a big-time play but other than that, not much to watch.

Dallas is a **** show. They have some fun playmakers as was evident by 2 kick off returns for touchdowns last week. But they're hot garbage. They're 2-7 vs. teams that aren't a joke (Giants and Browns)

9Chiefs won another 1 score game. They're now 9-0 in 1 score games and 2-1 in games decided by 2 scores or more. Shades of 2022 Vikings. 11-0 in 1 score games and 2-4 in 2 score games.

Watching the game I literally said "No one wants to win this game" and I stand by that. It was ugly.

Cowboys would be wise to tank. They have a super talented locked up core, Dak is overpaid but it happened. They need to bolster their interior DL and just general defense. They also if they tank hard can grab a second round RB.

GIants though need to tank to get the 1 pick to try to rebuild. The question is will they squander it? Will Daboll stick around? etc.

I saw someone somewhere else raise the point that the Patriots were paying Bradys company TB12 around 10+ million a year while he played there. And stopped when he left. How is this not a salary cap violation.

Honest Question, what super talented core do the Cowboys have locked up?

I guess I should have prefaced it with saying assuming they lock up Micah. That's my bad. Micah, Martin (who will likely extend again), and CeeDee are 3 all pro level players. And Trevon Diggs is a very good corner.
