REAL FOOTBALL Thread

Falcons are in luck because there are several good pass rushers on the market. JPP, Graham, Hughes, Orakpo, Houston, etc. Houston is clearly the best player, but Orakpo may be the best value if you get him cheap due to injuries.

He will likely have to settle for a reduced deal I would think.

Houston is getting the tag or he would have been ideal.

JPP is a huge no thank you for me. There isn't much out there that doesn't have big ?s

The D isn't going to turn a 180 in yr 1 anyway so get you a solid O addition to keep us scoring points. Will probably help Roddy age a little more gracefully.

Health is a concern for him, but JPP is a stud, and like Hardy just entering the DE prime.

ANd I think that if we add a pass rush in FA and the draft we'll be back to being at least a respectable D. We have a strong secondary and a stable of DTs.

I would think Hardy is the one to target. Back issues and DE's don't mix.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows considers it "more likely" the 49ers release OLB Ahmad Brooks than Aldon Smith.

The 49ers have one of the worst salary-cap situations in the league, as they're currently projected to be about $6 million over the expected $142 million threshold. Brooks carries a $7.055 million cap hit, but the 49ers would clear just $1.5 million by releasing him. Releasing Smith would save $9.754 million. Second-year OLB Aaron Lynch is expected to be a starter after a strong rookie season.

Interesting. Could be more pass rush available....

Brooks is awesome and would be a great pickup for anyone. Its unfortunate he showed up out of shape at the start of the year but really turned it on as the year progressed. It makes sense for the niners to release him because Lynch needs to be an everydown player and they have to do everything in their power to keep Smith long term.

I certainly don't think anything is a given over there. They still have loads of talent but this coaching staff must prove they know what they are doing.

Yeah, listen to the head coach and you will see he is brilliant.

or not.....

Window closing in SF?

I said it last year, it was their last year to keep all their talent, now it's heavily on Kaepernick, and the FO's ability to maximize the draft without high picks. That being said, there's a reason basically only the Patriots have been able to sustain long term success and it's because of Brady and the FO's ability to maximize the draft as well as trades and FA. And of course the coaching staff's ability to maximize that talent from the draft as well.

Niners I will give them credit though, long term if Kaepernick is legit, they did the right thing by cutting off one year of the window because it does set you up better long term. It's better to lock up a guy before the market continues to spiral out of control. Seahawks are seemingly waiting til the last minute to re-sign Wilson (probably because of the cap) and it will hurt them long term. Falcons saved long term money by signing Ryan when they did instead of letting him play out another season and then you're forced to overpay for a QB (Jay Cutler) cause you're not the only suitor he has at that point. Most NFL players will trade a bit of long term financial gains for short term stability.

49ers are still fine for the next year in terms of talent on the roster and hopefully Justin Smith hangs around a bit longer.

The 2014 draft looks incredible so far and with Baalkes track record I think the 49ers will always be able to get high level performers through the draft. I'm just concerned about the coaching at this point. York really screwed up the potential juggernaut for years to come.

Niners don't have the RB talent. May be crazy but i don't think they'll go into next year with Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter as their RBs.

That being said if they restructure Aldon and Cut Vernon Davis they should be able to free up a chunk of change to be under the cap and keep Gore or sign a gamble back like Helu or McFadden.

Hyde was good last year when he got his attempts. They will darft another RB late and re-sign Gore. Find it hard to believe Gore is going anywhere.

I also don't think Vernon will be cut. Maybe a restructure. They need to find a way to keep their Culliver or Cox. Then they will have a solid secondary again.

The issue is that with projected draft salaries on their picks, even with rollover cap, they're projected like 3 millino over the cap, can't make 3 million appear out of nowhere. They either need the cap to be higher than the projected 142, or to make a big cut or 2.

The guys and their approximate potential cap savings

Aldon Smith - 9.75M
Brooks - 4M
WIllis - 7M
Boldin - 3M
Davis - 5M
Justin Smith - 4M
Stevie Johnson - 6M
Phil Dawson - 3M

And that's about it before the 1M club.

I guess they could just cut Stevie Johnson, but would they do that with Crabtree leaving for FA? As far as 2016 FAs they have ALdon, Davis, Justin, and Boone to consider if they want to extend and lose some of the current cap for future relief.

The Whiners could still do OK if they could just get someone in there to put together an offense that plays to Kaep's strengths. He has talent but as with RG3 if you put him in the wrong offense good things don't happen. The Whiners, IMO looked about as lost on offense the second half of last season as the Cards looked the last couple of weeks with the 3rd string QB in there. I would have hated to be their D the second half of last season, they had to carry the whole team while at around 1/2 strength because of injuries.

They could easily cut Johnson and draft a WR as well as cut Brooks.

If they do that and that WR doesn't pan out (which happens) they're then royally screwed. I'm not saying they can't come out the other end, but Boldin isn't getting any younger, and they won't have much cap flexibility to add someone else.
