REAL FOOTBALL Thread

We were bereft of talent a week ago, particularly on defense. Searcy, Cox, and Orakpo were great additions that are young enough to keep contributing for at least the next 3-4 years. Re-signing Morgan was key. Now we have the makings of a decent defense if guys can stay healthy.

Now just gotta figure out if our QB is Mettenberger or Mariotta. That's the main decision that will determine whether we rise to the top of the AFC or stay stuck in the doldrums.

Best call is to trade out for whatever you can get if you think Mettenburger is the guy. Because He shouldn't get in the way of a guy like Mariota for any reason other than Mett is THE guy...

So I'm bored and looking at available FAs I hope the Falcons poke around for one reason or another

Crabtree - may sign a show me deal, would be a fantastic weapon and great insurance if Roddy gets hurt.
Hardy - Really makes the most sense, offer him either a show me deal, or a deal with not a lot of guaranteed money or an opt out if he gets suspended again.
Bierman - I really hope he comes back, hopefully after the market settle he's willing to come back still very cheap. His versatility is key.
Bowe - Similar idea to Crabtree, on a show me deal he could have some value to the Falcons as Roddy insurance
de la Puente/Goodwin - Kick the tires as our center depth is fine, but if it can improve I won't complain
Long - Imagine he's holding out for a big deal, would keep an eye on him if he's not signed later in the FA period.
Tamme - May make the most sense. Not a world beater of a tight end but at least gives us an option if he's cheap.
Carimi - Need him back for depth, I'm guessing he's testing FA for a starting gig, but if he doesn't sign, bring him back.
Finnegan - if he's willing to sign a show me deal I wouldn't mind him, but I don't think we sign him because we generally don't sign d-bags.

Mettenberger is bad and he won't make it through a full season healthy anyways. I don't watch college football but I know a lot of big time LSU fans and they don't even believe in him. It should tell NFL teams a lot that even LSU homers think he sucks. That didn't stop the Raiders from taking JaWalrus or the Chiefs taking Tyson Jackson.

Does anyone else think it's in appropriate for the official NFL twitter to openly advocate a team trading their star quarterback and state that a team has no chance to win the superbowl?

Does anyone care?

Jeron Johnson could be a solid signing for the Skins. He's played well in very limited opportunities and is a very good special teams players. Playing behind Chancellor, it's hard to tell what you really get.

49ers LB Chris Borland tells Mark Fainaru-Wada & Steve Fainaru of "Outside the Lines" he is retiring due to “long-term effects” head trauma.

Breaking from @OTLonESPN: 49ers LB Chris Borland retiring b/c of concerns about long-term effects of head trauma: http://es.pn/18zMb3C

...wow.

The NFL might not exist in the form we hvae now 20 years IMO. The dangers are too great.
When you have active players retiring over this, potentially prominent/potentially pro-bowl caliber guys leaving the game while they are young and heading into their primes... something has to change.

Without time to digest this, as an NFL fan and a 49ers fan, this really sucks. That said, as a person, good on Borland for getting out while he still has a life in front of him, with his health, and with plenty of time to explore other ventures.
