This deal is clearly just the first of a series of deals. Clearly Boston is going to flip Sale to the Braves for the package clv detailed in his informative blog.
I do think this means Quintana could be available. I thought they would try and rebuild on the fly, but this is a long term package. Everyone is for sale
Quintana is going to cost a crap ton too. If the WS do trade him their farm will be totally rebuilt.
True.
Nobody is saying the deal wasn't fair. Or that they should have taken another deal.
I just think a lot of ppl thought they'd get more. People were talking about Betts or other players already in MLB. Moncada is a stud. But it's like trading him to the dodgers for Seager and some stuff. But Seager has actually done it at the MLB level.
Again, that was the type of deal ppl on this board wanted for Tehran + Viz. Now I know that is message board BS, but if Sale was a Brave we'd have wanted Moncada + a lot more. That's all I'm saying.
Now the socks are clearly in rebuild mode....What does Quintana cost?

What I thought would happen.
But for comparison sakes:
Moncada = Swanson
Kopech = Newcomb
Basabe = Acuna
Diaz = Cabrera
So, how would you guys feel right now: Sale to the Braves for Swanson, Newcomb, Acuna and Cabrera?
Disaster of a trade
yep
But at least the Bosox have a real chance to win a WS AND they have virtually an unlimited budget EVERY year, not just when they are opening a new stadium.
I don't think any GM is dumb enough to trade that away without a real shot at winning it all. I think Dave Stewart would have said N.... wait.. never mind. I am just glad Copy didn't do it... now he needs to relax and don't get worried that other teams are making the headlines. We don't need to make any big moves this year.
There are always GM's who think their team is closer than they actually are. Dave Stewart was one of those.

While it's tough to gauge the value of Swanson against Moncada, I feel quite certain that all of other comps are pretty poor. Newcombe is closer to the majors with a better track record. Kopech is closer to Touki or Fried in terms of value. Acuna is basically a lock for top 100 as well. Basabe isn't close to him as a prospect right now. And Cabrera (I'm assuming you mean Mauricio) has already found success in the majors. Again, no where close in value.

How about this. I predict Swanson will have more WAR in his first 5 seasons(full) than Moncada will in his first 5.
Agree Newcomb > Kopech right now and Acuna >+ Basabe, but I don't trust Cabrera yet. He found lighting in a bottle last year and not sure he will sustain it yet. I have my posi-brave's glasses on, so maybe I can.
Moncada has similar value as Swanson but cost $62M to sign.
Newcomb is a Lefty but doesn't have the stuff of Kopech. I believe Kopech will be ranked ahead of Newcomb when the spring rankings come out (already #30 on MLB.com vs #47 for Newcomb). Basabe is at least a similar prospect to Acuna IF not better. The only thing Acuna has over Basabe right now is age. He may ultimately be the better prospect but he's certainly more of a current risk to implode. And the Cabrera/Diaz comp to me is pretty good. Both big FB guys who are straight relivers but Diaz has more of an idea where the ball is going to go while Cabrera has some ML experience.
Doesn't really matter in the end. Bottom line is: the Braves were never getting Sale for a hand full of magic beans.
