Remember when folks reall thought

Right now I am favoring the chariot that hasnt turned into a pumpkin over the pumpkin that hasnt turned into a chariot. Outside of 2012 their OPS's are very similar. Defense favors Headley a lot but that would matter more to me if we didnt have Simmons at SS.

I agree with this guy.

I was definitely in the Chase Headley camp. **** it. I'm a fan. It's all cool.

Judging a player off his worst year, when he has been battling injuries all year and coming off surgery.

I'm sure people were saying McCann was finished last year as well...

Still would. Upside with Headley is MVP quality, upside with Johnson is what we're seeing now. Same basic thought process behind Prado for Upton, you trade for a guy with a massive ceiling over a guy who does a lot of things well. Headley is no Upton, but Johnson is no Prado either.

How is Headley MVP quality?

Trading for Headly would be a mistake, he wouldn't come cheap. Let's develop our own guy at 3rd and let Johnson continue give us solid production in the interim.

Just last year he hit .286/.376/.498 with 31 homers 95 runs and 115 RBIs and 17 SB with gold glove defense. That's pretty close to MVP play.

Agreed. This debate reminds me of those talking like Wainwright was no longer an ace based on last year. It's short-sighted in other words.

But the guy has only had one MVP type season and next year will be his age 30 season. Wainwright had plenty of ace seasons under his belt before the injury.

The potential is still there and he's also great defensively. But my point was more to compare them coming off injury. Wainwright had been coming off Tommy John recently last year. But now he has a full season under his belt since it and is back on track. I believe Headley's recent surgery and injuries have effected his performance this year. Further, I expect him to bounce back offensively next season much like Mac did this year. This is also why I said it is short-sighted.

Outside of last year his high for OPS was .773 and he only has 2 seasons with an OBP over .345. I dont care how good his defense is 3B is just not a premium defensive position. Its nice to have but you can find good defensive 3B who put up a .700 OPS for chump change. If he was Manny Machado good defensively at 3B I might be okay with a big contract.
