Requirements for a successful offseason?

What moves do you think would constitute a successful offseason?

Personally, I would consider this offseason a failure if Wren does not sign Heyward and Freeman to long term contracts. Maybe that is harsh, but I feel like we need to hold onto these guys at least into their late 20's.

Other than that I really don't think we need to make major moves. Maybe get rid of Uggla to make room for LaStella, add to the pen and add a veteran starter like Halladay or Santana. Someone that can come in and be a good influence on the younger guys. I would love to trade Laird, but I seriously doubt Fredi will let his twin brother get traded.
 
1. Find someone to take Uggla and some of his salary.

2. Add a cheap veteran pitcher or 2 if they come available, - a standard move for any off-season. One starter and one reliever, or a guy who can do both

3. Replace Reed Johnson.

4. Grab Infante if possible.
 
Extending Freeman and Heyward would be an amazing accomplishment, but I don't know how feasible that will be. I sort of think Freeman is more likely to sign than Heyward.

Getting rid of Uggla has to be near the top of our priorities.

I want an ace, but that's wishful thinking. I think Price could be had, but at what cost to our future?

I think this team is, or should be, in win now mode. I'm not sure how large our window is, or how much longer this team has before it is shut. I think the new stadium bodes well for the future, but we'll see.
 
1. Add a starting pitcher. Preferably on a one year deal. Preferably someone with upside (Johnson or Hughes for example). Preferably a free agent rather than someone we have to give up talent for.

2. Move Uggla if someone is willing to pay $5M/year or more of his remaining contract. If we can't find a taker at that price, keep him.

3. Extend at least one of our core young players to a team friendly contract.

4. Avoid paying the price (which undoubtedly will be exorbitant) for David Price or any similar pitcher.

5. Avoid any long-term deals for any pitcher period, whether someone we acquire or someone already on the team.

6. Add one more lefty arm for the pen. Maybe EOF.

7. Keep an open mind about Brian McCann. If he is willing to come back on team-friendly terms, bring him back.
 
If we did nothing but stand pat I would say that was a successful offseason. The team as is is a very good team. Just need Wren not to make anymore Uggla/BJ/Lowe/Kawakami type moves that bog the team down. We can live with one bad contract, but getting next to nothing for 28 million in Uggla/BJ is killing the team.

This is pretty spot on. I would add a few more:

Aquire a legit MLB second baseman. Trading for Kendrick would be my top choice, but Kinsler and Phillips work too provided the cost in terms of prospects and cash makes sense. I'm even starting to think Mark Ellis would work.

Fortify the bench with a RHed and LHed bat, one of whom can play CF. Chavez would be a great pick up, and there are probably quite a few RHed bats on the FA market.
 
Uggla situation has to be fixed somehow, some way. The pen is not too big of an issue to roll with. The bench has to be upgraded, not sure we need a CF with Heyward on board.

Im not convinced Wren wont do some serious tweaking.
 
Why would you want to add another contract liability like Phillips has? Sure he plays good D, but his offense is lackluster and it will only get worse.
Kendrick will cost too much young talent.
 
It really doesn't matter what some think about second base. The Braves are not going to bring in anyone who has a high contract number. They might bring in another major leaguer to compete but the job is going to most likely be won by someone internal. Braves should focus their money on extensions and taking a risk in the starting rotation on a FA signing.

1. I like what Enscheff and nsacpi said above. I might like to see another power righty brought in (or up from the minors), EOF definitely resigned and Infante as a bench player/ super sub. I'd also like Uggla to go to an AL team just so we wouldn't have to face him multiple times IF he found his stroke again...

2. With Huddy gone and BMac and Uggla most likely out the door, someone is going to have to step up as the de facto 'team captain'.

3. Sucks to be a mid-market team. We can either spend some bucks to fill in holes (MLB talented 2B, veteran yet capable starting pitcher, strong LH and RH bench players and a strong LH and RH reliever) OR sign our young talent to contract extensions. If we fill needs with proven players, we'll lose young talent in the near future. If we sign our young players to extensions, we'll have to shop the Wal-Mart bin for players to replace Uggla, Hudson, bench and bullpen....This team is so close to being 'great' rather than just 'very good', I wish we had more money to spend.
 
1- Get rid of Uggla.

2- Add another bullpen arm, EOF would be ideal.

3- Sign at least one of Heyward/Freeman to a longterm deal.

4- A veteran starter would be great, i like Huddy but not at that price.

5- Add a bench piece, have the money to get someone, Chavez would be a good signing.

In short, we dont need to do all that much.

We could do nothing this offseason and still be in good shape.
