#Braves acquring Nos. 73 and 103 international signing-bonus slots from #Rays for RH Garrett Fulenchek

Those last two slots acquired from Rays netted #Braves another $494.200 in international signing bonus room

Fangraphs on Fulenchek:

7. Garrett Fulenchek, RHP Video: Fulencheck was an unknown prospect until last fall when the power righty from rural Texas hit 96 mph for scouts. The projectable righty took another step forward in the spring, sitting 91-95 and hitting 96 mph while also flashing a 55 slider and enough changeup and command to project as a starter, which led the Braves to take him in the 2nd round.

He has limited miles on his arm, limited experience versus top flight competition and turned 18 after the draft, so he was young for his draft class as well. His velocity dipped into the high-80’s at times during the spring, but his arm speed recovered late, impressing in the GCL and in instructs, with lots of sink to his fastball that induced boatloads of grounders.

John Sickels on Fulenchek:

24) Garrett Fulenchek, RHP, Grade C: Borderline C+. HIGH CEILING ALERT. Would rank higher on pure ability (Baseball Prospectus slots him aggressively at fifth in the system, which may look like a great call four years from now), age 18, struggled with consistency in rookie ball but second round pick could become a three-pitch starting force if it all comes together. A year behind Grosser but could be on similar trajectory.

I don't feel great about this at first blush. It's been clear for a while that we'd be trading for slot money, but I just always envisioned it happening by trading for bad contracts. Fulenchek just seems like the type of guy we're trying to acquire instead of the type of guy we're trying to trade. Still, I guess this amounts to trading an interesting pitching prospect for an interesting positional prospect (Pache).

These last two slot money trades make the Martin trade look a lot better.

Martin is ready to pitch in the majors now, though. Paroubeck and Fulenchek are a long way from that. If a guy like Toussaint has a slim chance of ever becoming anything, then those two guys hardly have a chance.

That's oversimplifying, but basically it comes down to figuring out what different teams value. The A's value guys who are ready now and can provide real value in the near future. A team like the Rays values upside above all else, similar to the way we have recently.

Do not like. Fulenchek is exactly the kind of arm you want to hold onto. Never know where he may wind up.

This is a bad move from a baseball standpoint as Fulenchek could easily be better than anyone we sign in IFA.

BTW if I'm reading this right, we sold Fulenchek for about 500K in internation, we just a year ago spent 860K getting him to sign.

Sure, but the reverse is also true. I would say guys like Cruz and Pache are roughly equivalent to about a 1st-2nd round talent in the draft (though younger), and Maitan is obviously way beyond that.

And we need hitting way more than we need pitching right now. It's a good move to deal from our depth to address our weakness.

Yeah he would have been one of the arms I would be most reluctant to trade. This one stings a bit.

I guess it goes to show the value of these slot bonuses. Let's hope next year we get similar value in return when we trade ours (like the Dodgers did).

Good point, and that's something else to consider. We'll be able to do the reverse next year.

While I understand the concern, I'm less caught up about the downside. I don't see much. We've wanted to be players on the international front. There you have it. I've seen GF. Great arm, but this is why we are dealing from a position of strength. Povse is ahead and honestly better. We are so much better off and with the bats this year and next from the international front, we are good no matter how GF turns out.

So the Braves are essentially trading pitching prospects for hitting prospects and now people are mad? Are we in bizzaro chop country world right now?

The world of slot money is relatively new. There is lots of research out there showing what a typical draft choice at various spots in the draft is worth. We know a lot less about the value of international slot money. My instinct is that because the prospects being signed are so young the return on international slot money is not as good as the return on an equal amount of draft pool money. But I haven't seen any research on that yet.

He was a LONG ways away. Not shown a ton in the box scores either. Moving on as we have plenty of his ilk.

Do the Braves have enough funds now to cover the international commitments?

Yep, with a little room to spare. Here's the itemized view . . .

Pool
Braves' original bonus pool for 2015-2016: $2,458,400
$ received from OAK: $388,400
$ received from LAD: $249,000
$ received from TB: $494,200
Braves' pool after trades: $3,590,000
Braves' pool w/ trades and 5% overage that is taxed at 75%: $3,769,500

Picks
Derian Cruz: $2,000,000
Cristian Pache: $1,400,000

Amount Remaining (assumes we go over by 5%): $369,500

So it seems like we have $ for one or more lesser IFA players.

Anyone see if we nabbed the Venezuelan SS for less than 500 k we were projected to?

Not yet. Juan Morales. Bodes well if we snag him too. I know we gave up projected upside but I'd much rather be players in an area we haven't been good at in awhile.

GF was a holdover from the previous administration. My guess is that the new brass wasn't nearly as high on him as Wren's crew was. The Braves have had plenty of time to evaluate GF and they obviously thought the odds of him ever tapping his potential was remote.

Teams that have talked to #Braves say their deals in last 24 hours could be a template for their approach to more trades in July. . . .

#Braves have let clubs know they're open to dealing from pitching prospect depth in a trade for a bat. They've asked about young catchers
