RH Garrett Fulenchek to Rays for more internationa slot money

You can still sign all of those prospects in 2016 without making this trade. This is very clearly the Braves thinking Pache is worth trading Martin, Fulencheck and Paroubeck. That's quite the pill to swallow.

Martin's a 5th starter type, nothing special by any means.

The other two could turn out to be something but i'll take Hart and the FO's word over getting Pache, and others.

I dont think Martin really had any value since any team could have had him several times over. The other kids are just like Pache. Extreme lottery tickets.

Martin obviously had value if he was able to procure that much slot money given the going rate of those slots. The Blue Jays also paid a hefty price for their slot money.

It's probably a good trade off. Again, Pache seems like a quality prospect. I'm just more stunned by the sheer price of so little slot money.

Can you imagine what the price of draft picks would be if those trades were allowed?

Agreed on that, I was expecting more fringe prospects to be traded really. Martin was actually the kinda guy I was expecting us to trade in these deals, but Fulenchek was pretty surprising.

Yeah, agreed. I'm not going to get worked up over it, but it does seem like the braves have telegraphed their intentions about the international market… I like it, but it does seem to have eroded their bargaining power a little bit.

All in all, I love the idea of going after some of these high ceiling international position guys. It's another thing we've been missing for a while.

I think you have to balance the strategy of acquiring (and keeping) young pitching with what the FA market offers. For instance, the best FA bats after this season will be Upton and Heyward, both unlikely to return to Atlanta. The best FA starting pitchers are: Price, Greinke (likely to opt out), Cueto, Gallardo, Samardzija, Zimmerman with the second tier being guys like Kazmir, Leake, Latos and Lackey (old but still good).

The next FA year is probably worse for bats and definitely worse for pitchers.

So, to me the play would be to use the payroll space made to go after a couple of top end pitchers in FA and trade/develop bats.

I don't know anything about this international money crap, but if this kind of stuff has to happen to get that 2016 kid that folks are comparing to Miggy Cabrera then I'm all for this move.
