Dayton, TN (Rhea County) is actually a pretty cool area. I grew up right next to it in a much smaller and poorer town called Decatur and still live about 30 miles away in Cleveland. The Scopes Monkey Trial took place in Dayton. It's a pretty town with a cool history. It also has a kick-ass Brewery called Monkey Town Brewery that opened recently and produces some very tasty micro-brews along with a solid food menu. It's worth stopping by if you are passing by this way.
Vegas has that seediness. Fremont Street.
Downtown Reno is one of the most depressing places I've ever been. And I love places like Liverpool and Detroit.
Just hold your nose and keep driving until you get to Tahoe.
ha...yes
btw the rural South has nothing on certain parts of upstate NY when it comes to societal dysfunction.
And NH and Maine. Oh my.
Plan to spend a few days there post-Christmas after yuletiding in upper Arizona. Luckily Phoenix and Vegas are two of the easier places to get to from Missoula on the quick&cheap (thanks to Allegiant).
Old Vegas is what took me from hating Las Vegas to being fiercely ambivalent about it.
And if any of the non-Southerners happen to be blessed to pass through the greater Charlotte area, let me know. We've got 6 microbreweries within a 10-15 minute drive.
And NH and Maine. Oh my.
I like charlotte...i have a client visit there every july...will be in touch
I drove up to Quebec through Maine this summer...the contrast between the Canadian and American sides of the border is not flattering to us...i stopped at the last town in Maine and had a hot dog...im pretty sure it was a kind of meat I've never had before
Btw, I feel like this discussion has a lot more life in it yet.
Most of the large cities in Canada are on the US border. Doesn't that tell you something and gives you a reason why their border cities are much nicer than ours?
I understand that...but I'm talking about a comparison involving small towns
But even then. Those are the prime real estate spots in the Canadian real estate market. Its nothing to the American market.

yeah...not an apples to apples comparison...but I've become a big fan of canada
Montreal is amazing.
You can add Rhode Island (ex-Providence) to that list. The SO finished up school in PVD this summer, so I was shuttling between Boston and RI every weekend for about a year. I was kind of shocked that a little enclave wedged between Connecticut and Massachusetts could be so damn hick, but it was. Saw more Trump paraphernalia around Warwick/Kingstown/Narragansett than I did anywhere in the South. That being said, and maybe it's because I grew up in a hick state and can wear the mask pretty well when the company demands, I did grow a unique fondness for RI.
