But the sting operation was always an 'insurance' policy to cover their tracks in the event of a loss.

Instead of trying to convince nothing is happening

I would just let it play out and see what the evidence shows

But hey, maybe the president should anger tweet that he can pardon himself to make him look totally innocent again

CNN - House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday he agreed with South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy that the FBI did "exactly" what it was supposed to do in its handling of the investigation into Russian election meddling and possible connections to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

"I think Chairman Gowdy's initial assessment's accurate, I think, but we have some more digging to do. We're waiting for some more document requests," Ryan told reporters at a news conference on Capitol Hill. "It would have been helpful if we got this information earlier."

Gowdy said the FBI did exactly what it was supposed to do when "it got the information it got." Paul Ryan concurs.

What information might they have gotten, I wonder?

Since no one else seems interested in picking up on your question, I'll give it a go. What Gowdy and Ryan appear to be referring to is information coming in both in the from of signals intelligence and human intelligence that the Russians were making a concerted effort to insinuate themselves into the Trump campaign for the purpose of advancing their interests. What no one at the FBI or elsewhere seems to have anticipated is that the Trump campaign would welcome these efforts by the Russians and view them as an opportunity, as something to be encouraged, as something to be encouraged via a quid pro quo even.

The important thing to note is that the FBI had a solid factual basis for acting as it did, and that those actions did not represent some "deep state" conspiracy to undermine Trump's campaign. We can quibble about certain details and judgment calls that various FBI officials made but broadly speaking their investigation into the Russian attempts to target the Trump campaign had a legitimate basis.

the information about allied intelligence services (UK, France, Germany, Estonia, Australia, Netherlands, Poland are the ones I'm aware of) picking up the signals intelligence and sharing it with the CIA has been around for quite some time...it is not exactly new

it is less widely known but my understanding is that some of those allied intelligence services supplemented this information with information gathered by human intelligence...it remains to be seen if any of them are willing to burn those sources

The idea that they picked them up is around. We still do not know what these communications were and who they were between. To launch this type of investigation they better be of significance.

Gowdy and Ryan seem satisfied that the FBI reaction to the incoming information was appropriate.
