Russia Collusion Scandal (aka A Leftist fantasy)

I worked on a project that involved harvesting data from Twitter and FB....the data was easy to obtain and both companies tried to be helpful...this was five years ago when we were all young and naive...even then though I couldn't shake this slightly big brotherish feeling about what we were doing

even the biggest trump haters in tech media like daringfireball are rightfully putting all this on Facebook:

In the short run I always caution against reading anything into the market’s sense, but in this case I think investors are right. Facebook is in some serious trouble. This Cambridge Analytica scandal proves that Facebook ought to be heavily regulated, and that’s not good for Facebook’s bottom line.

I take issue, though with the phrase “ended up in the hands of”. The implication with that phrasing is that Cambridge Analytica hoodwinked Facebook, or breached some sort of defenses. They didn’t. The information Cambridge Analytica obtained was exactly the information Facebook provides to advertisers by design. Cambridge Analytica just used that data in ways Facebook didn’t anticipate. Or perhaps better said, Facebook never anticipated that when people started to realize just what Facebook enables, that there’d be outrage.

within the next five years we are all gonna get fifty bucks from FB as a class action settlement...if they are lucky that'll be it...there are other much worse scenarios for them

The end of social media would be a temendous positive for the world. It's never going to happen but a man can dream

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but political consulting is cutthroat and CA absolutely delivered using available data. They didn't hack accounts, they manipulated a ****ty system and harvested information using a predictive algorithm.

There is no story here.

I don't disagree with your top line, but I'm not sure that I don't see a story. I think it's a story on its own merits, just maybe not a Trump election story.

There are all kinds of angles that are potentially of interest. The privacy angle, the malevolent social media titan angle, the potential Big Brother/Big Data nexus, the novel integration of classic rat****ing-for-hire with tech, the question of whether or not the whole thing is snake oil, the fact that it's bankrolled by the Mercers...

It can be utterly unsurprising yet still newsworthy.

Perhaps.

I think digital privacy is passé in all of its mutations. And that the vast majority of people couldn't care less about the Mercers.

Maybe you approach it from the angle of individuals/enterprises profiting from personal data. Maybe that stirs the pot.

It's just not very compelling.

I guess my bannings are because of the vast left wing conspiracy to silence my conservative voice

Are you accusing me of something that you just got done doing yourself?

Sure. But I'm directing it at you, specifically, not at a personal straw-ogre, as you tend to. I think your signal-to-noise ratio could use some work. I enjoy having a dialogue with you, but I find your tendency to go for the (usually facile) generalized jab at what you are against far less compelling than your advocacy for things you support. You're quite critical of other people here...I hope you'll accept my criticism as constructive.
