As I indicated, Trump might have had principled policy reasons for his views on Russia/Ukraine/sanctions. He might not have been literally "selling" a change in policy. But I think he was well aware that the Russians were dangling various benefits to encourage him along that path and to support him. Given what the Russians were doing was illegal (not to mention highly objectionable from a national security perspective), we need to use all legal (and political) means at our disposal to prevent future political candidates from thinking that it is ok for them to receive benefits (whether in the form of a cut in a lucrative financial transaction or through efforts to affect the campaign) from foreigners as long as the policy changes helping those foreigners have a principled basis.
We also need to send that message to foreign actors as well. This is about more than just Russia. It is also about Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE.

Prosecutors said for the first time that they have evidence of Roger Stone communicating with WikiLeaks, according to a new court filing from special counsel prosecutors.
During its investigation of the Russian hack of the Democrats, "the government obtained and executed dozens of search warrants on various accounts used to facilitate the transfer of stolen documents for release, as well as to discuss the timing and promotion of their release," the prosecutors wrote Friday to a federal judge.
"Several of those search warrants were executed on accounts that contained Stone's communications with Guccifer 2.0 and with Organization 1," which is WikiLeaks.

The known communications already make it clear that collusion didnt exist prior.
