Sale stops the bleeding GDT Braves vs Brewers

I am surprised by Acuna's performance thus far.. but one should take caution with SSS in any direction. As games go on, his knees are going to hurt, he will compensate and other things will end up hurting.. not saying he will go on the IL or anything.. but I would bet he will miss a few games due to inflammation.. What will be interesting is the numbers around those times.. Hoping that won't happen of course and he just beasts his way through the year. But just like Strider, he didn't get his full offseason of conditioning and workouts... it cost Strider a hammy issue which zapped his velo.. I have a feeling it will get Acuna as well.
The hamstring isn't what cost Strider his velo. It was garbage before that.

Yeah, it was foolish to think a guy coming back from his 2nd major knee surgery might not be great when he wasn't great coming back from his first knee surgery.

I'd be interested to see your Acuna projections where you had him at 1.000 OPS right out of the gate. Could you go ahead and link it for us? Or is this an "I told you so" despite never telling us anything?

I wasn't calling out anyone specific but I guess that post got you in your feels?

except it wasn't. in his first start of the season he was hitting 98.. which is actually good coming back from his injury AND his first start of the season.
I went back and checked and he had 3 pitches in that first start that registered at 98 and they were all within the first 3 batters. Starting with the 4th batter he was in the mid 90s with his fastball. And it's been there ever since. So no his velo drop after the 3rd hitter of the game wasn't due to his hamstring. More lilkey he was just super amped up to be on the mound again.

Or maybe he got tired really quickly because he was pitching for the first time in a year. He was hitting in the minors and ST also at times... he hasn't been close at all since the hammy. To think a hamstring issue couldn't possibly impact a guy who uses his legs so much to generate power is a bit silly.

Tired after 3 batters? There is one scenario more likely than all the others.

And go watch the the 13K video from the minors in one of his starts. Bunch of 96 fastballs and 84 sliders.

His velocity aint there. Maybe it will improve after an offseason of training. But it's not there now and hasn't been since the brace procedure.

looking at Strider's data, it is really hard to make anything conclusive. He threw 58 FA in his first start of the season. He peaked at his highest velo of the season by a good bit, but he faded fast.. Since then he is still fading but it has been less and less variance, however, his overall average has dropped. I think he just doesn't have the arm strength back yet and it is going to take a bit to get it back. This leads to what State has been saying, is it in Striders and maybe the teams best interest to move him to the pen the rest of the year.. or attack the deadline for a starter and then move him to the pen.

To be it just seems he was amped up to being in the majors for the first time in a year. The 98 fastball literally lasted for 3 hitters. Since then he's been mid 90s. That matches what he did in the rehab starts for the most part. If he can reach 98 for an inning then it might be be a good idea to have him close games out. But mid 90s wouldn't work there either.

Even accounting for the "amped up" argument, he threw consistently harder in his first start of the year and has been clearly slower since. Soft tissue injures have a way of lingering. It would be really silly to assume his hammy issue has had zero affect on his velocity.
