Drew Campbell taking some swings with the FCL team today. He was off to a decent (although very much abbreviated) start with Augusta this season. They've added a couple of OFs, but it would be nice to see what Campbell can do in the last month. Decent career at Louisville.

Ok what's this Estes guys stuff?
Well..here's what mlb wrote about him:
Estes has seen his stuff tick up since entering pro ball. He’ll throw his fastball in the 91-96 mph, sitting around 93-94 mph consistently. His main secondary offering is a slider that is a bit of a slurvy breaking ball, but is an average pitch when he stays on top of it. He continues to work on developing his changeup.

My thoughts : they've undersold his changeup. It's dangerous and borderline plus right now. I think it's more because his FB does sit 93-94..but there is some late movement to it that looks hittable until it ain't. Uncanny mindset for a guy his age. Command is OK, but will tighten up in time. He can overpower hitters because he thinks ahead of them. He's got a confident approach you won't see in many pitchers his age.

Kinda sounds Anderson ish.

On my list, Estes is the most pleasant statistical surprise of the year. I don't know what I expected. He was a 17-year-old when signed, so there's always the chance of greater physical maturity than with older high school players and college players. He's been good overall if a bit inconsistent (which is to be expected for a high school signee in his first year of full season baseball), but the K numbers have been there from the get-go. His peripherals are off the charts.

When He was selected, I didn't even think the Braves had a chance to get him signed. He was highly regarded but the projection on him was what intrigued me. Even if you watch the clips of him there is a certain amount of confidence he has about him. He doesn't get rattled and he enjoys working on his craft. 93-94 isn't as sexy as Cusick's 96-97, but Estes is not a "get by on guile " type. He can bring it. Like Tapate said, there's some Anderson ish vibe to him.

A couple of the services had him up there, but I still think the angle that he was a young high school grad at age 17 probably made his advisers think that the physical development he would likely experience during his college (or JC) career would really vault him up the draft. Braves had to go way overslot (they signed him for $497,000 which is $372,000 over the post-Round 10 assigned slot value). $497,000 was early-4th round money so while the decision wasn't particularly easy for Estes, there is considerable risk that he wasn't going to be picked higher than that in the future.

Estes and Grissom have been the two guys who have delivered the most from the 2019 draft strategy to this point. Owens has been hurt (but wasn't that effective before going down) and Johnson has shown his big fastball in Augusta with mixed results. Morton and Backstrom still appear to have problems making consistent contact in the FCL. Grissom and Ball were the only post-Round 10 guys who were at the alternate site in 2020 and I'm pretty much giving every minor league player a break in 2021 due to the cancelled 2020 season. It's going to be interesting to see how (and if in some cases) these guys develop.
