SATURDAY MINORS FINAL 5/4/19: Two more Riley bombs, Ian achors 2-hitter

6 IP, 2 H, 2 walks, 0 runs, 11 K's for Anderson.

Good night on the farm.

Phillies just got one run and have runners on second and third with no outs. It’s unreal how bad the Nats bullpen is. It seriously makes ours look awesome

Nats let Corbin hit in the top of the 7th with a runner on 2nd and 1 out. He struck out and was pulled... Ross started the 7th

just gave up a five spot lol but yes, it’s legit true

Nothing makes our pen look "awesome" that's not named Kimbrel plus.

Semantics? Sure.

There's a reason Snitker admitted he never came close to taking Soroka out before Ozzie's moneyball.

It really sucks that Riley is doing so well. Now everybody will be asking for him when we try to make a move at the deadline or in the offseason.

The only people that wouldn't have been asking for him at that point were Keith Law and The Blackjack Dealer. Don't kid yourself.

11 Ks in 6 IP is awesome. 3 BBs in 6 IP is not great.

I'd rather he'd K'd 7 and walked 1. I know he can strike guys out. I don't know if he can reliably find the zone.

Two of those walks came late (1 in the 6th and 1 after he pitched to one batter in the 7th), but I tend to agree with you that this is a bit of an issue. He threw 101 pitches with a 57/44 strike-to-ball count and that has to improve. He has yet to have a 2/1 or even a 5/3 strike-to-ball count this season. I think that ratio has to hit 60% consistently to spell big league success.

I'm hoping the issue is him chasing Ks with that curve a la Fried. Throwing that pitch out of the zone hoping to get hitters to chase it rather than relying on stuff.

But that's just a hope at this point.

His control is an issue but it's not Newk level bad.

You haven’t even been paying attention to the pen since everyone’s been shuffled apparently. All the numbers pretty much show the Nats are way way worse. Our pen has really started playing well now that Minter has settled, Webb and Dayton are up, Blevins is now here, and Biddle isn’t pitching

Not as bad as Newk but bad enough that without improvement it will limit his ceiling in the same way Newk's ceiling is limited by his lack of control. Though maybe not to the same extent.

There's no reason at all - save a Donaldson injury - not to let Riley spend the whole season at AAA. If you tried to force him into left field in the big leagues right now he would almost certainly be catastrophically bad defensively. Let him go through the ups and downs of the full season and see where he is at the end of the year.
