SATURDAY MINORS THREAD 6/10 ... Sims, Soroka Superb

Two dominating starts in a row.

Its startling how close two 19 year old kids are from starting in the majors. The Braves would have a legitimate reason for starting them int he rotation next year if you exclude the service time discussion. Those kids are earning it this year.

You can't keep these kids down. I know there will be calls to hold them till after June next year but I'm just not sure the braves can do that considering how well they've performed this year.

They are 19. I'm sure they have innings limits. They would kill a MLB pen. Let them do a whole yr in as and next year in aaa.

Newcombe sims and weigel should get the time next year. Find out if any are starters or if they are pen guys

Completely reasonable..especially the innings thresholds. Braves have been real bullish on the innings for Soroka which leads me to believe the Braves don't just look at innings in a vacuum. I suspect he has a lot of stress free innings which could potentially not be as damaging as a normal workload.

There is no question that Newcomb takes Colons spot this year and in the future. When does Jamie get traded? Do you promote Sims at that point? When does Weigel get a chance? I kind of like the prospects of having Dickey here for another year.

Reading comprehension ... not for everyone

Just earlier in the year we were getting reports that he was 94-97 with plus movement/location on his fastball along with better than average secondary offerings. The ceiling on Anderson is not written and for anyone to do that right now is ridiculous.

In a vacuum I see no role for dickey

In real life we know the braves must have bad vets on the team

I'd be in favor of dickey being the long guy in the pen. maybe a start or two early in the year when you don't need a fifth starter to ease sims and or weigel in. Maybe a spot start or two to lower innings for young guys

If the deal for Teheran becomes a reality, then Dickey is the vet I want to hold down a spot.

How could we trade Tehran now? He's been bad. We think we are close to being good.

Could we get happ straight up now? Who says no to that? I'd say both teams

I think different people have different definitions of the word ceiling. For some it's the maximum a player could ever become in any possible world. If it's theoretically possible a pitcher's fastball could jump 10 mph and he become and ace then that's his ceiling.

However, when you have a writeup on a guy talking about a ceiling, I think it's more taking about the best a player could turn out with normal development. Essentially what is a player's reasonable maximum.

I think when people put a number 3 ceiling on Anderson it's the latter. Assuming normal development, he probably tops out as a number 3. However, he is so young and far away that something unexpected could happen.

Anderson could put on a ton of muscle, see his fastball jump 3 mph, tighten his control up and become a TOR prospect. However, just as likely is him hitting a wall where he can't get his third pitch to develop or his control stalls and he never makes it higher than AA.

Both of those results would be somewhat unexpected. Assuming fairly normal development, Anderson has a ceiling of a number 3.

Soroka now 2.45 ERA in 70 innings with 15 BB and 64 K

Allard ERA is at 2.87 in 63 innings with 23 BB and 51 K

I am not usually okay with taking a college pitcher in the first round but I might be okay with adding Kyle Wright if he is there to pick at 5. He could probably go to high A this year and start at AA next year with Allard/Soroka at AAA and Newkomb/Sims/Weigel in the majors.

I wouldn't know Wright if he walked into my house. But everything I have seen says he is a no doubt draft if he falls to 5.

Soroka has already pitched quite an impressive work load. He looks to be an innings eater in the making.

Allard, Soroka, Folty, Wright, Newcomb rotation in 3 years would be something to behold.

We could trade some or all of Anderson, Wentz, Muller, Gohara, Touki, and Weigel for a humongous bat like Michael Trout!
