Schafer requests more playing time

I think Schafer had his three months last season and that might be it for him. He looked like he might develop into a decent 4th OF, but then he got hurt (again) and has really stunk it up since. I don't think his contributions from the first half of the 2013 season should be overlooked, but he has played poorly since.

Given his good ABs yesterday (particularly the one in the 9th obviously) combined with B. J.'s complete lack of contact whatsoever, give him his wish and move Heyward down to TRY to stretch the lineup and give Jason a chance at some RBI opportunities.

Can't hurt to shake up the lineup with a portion of what happened yesterday for a week or so...

CF- Schafer
LF- J-Up
1B- Freeman
C- Gattis
RF- Heyward
3B- Johnson
2B- Pastornicky
SS- Simmons

He got let off the hook for screwing up that last AB. Swung at ball four to tie it twice, and then allowed a strike that was called a ball.

Fouling off pitches and laying off close ones - absolutely NO CHANCE any of those occurred with B. J. at the plate.

Correct, but let's not sniff his farts just yet. I think the only way he is a starter is for a High Times photo shoot.

I don't recall saying Schafer's the long-term solution for anything - simply that he's currently a better option than B. J. given our struggles. He'll certainly reach base via walk or bunt more often, and is definitely far more likely to give you the opportunity to play small ball when the situation presents itself.

Just kinda bustin' balls dude. We are totally dicked in CF. If we are turning to Jordan, we got issues.

Just saw AJC article...during Bjs tenure here he has 207 K's and 101 hits.

Schafer is likely another one of those guys (and the league is littered with them) that have to play every day to be good but aren't good enough to play every day. There are a lot of guys who get regular playing time in the minors and tear up AAA and then come up to the bigs where they are playing once or twice a week and people wonder how they ever could have hit .350 in AAA. It takes a different type of player (usually a veteran) who can adapt to that usage pattern and with what they are paying B.J. Upton, that usage pattern is pretty much pre-ordained for the time being.

Schafer needs to go to a bad team and play every day and see what happens. Of course, that already happened in Houston and he came up wanting.

even Costanza is better than Schafer. He'll get on base more than Schafer, and neither have power. The only way BJ gets on base is a wild pitch on strike three.

**** Fredi "Robin" Gonzalez.

I am almost to the point where I can type the sentence, replace Schafer and Upton both with Costanza and Cunningham and not mean it as a joke.

I would keep BJ, but would love to see Cunningham or Constanza replace Schafer. Cunningham, ideally.

Personally, I'd try to trade for the recently DFA'd Justin Maxwell (Royals) and DFA Schafer. I know Justin has had a terrible start but he has a much better track record than Schafer and like Schafer he can steal bases and play all three outfield positions. Maxwell also has power to go with the speed, so more potential there than Schafer.

Ideally I'd ask the Royals to take Schafer in return but I doubt they or any team would want him.

I have a random love of Schafer to be honest, it's probably his speed, but I would love to see Cunningham up here. I've been a Cunningham fan for quite a while. But, NOT Constanza, I'm sick of the guy coming up and sucking.

Remember when the org was putting all this emphasis on speed? This started with Schafer, Josh Anderson and Gorkys Hernandez with the thinking that at least one of them would become a regular CF. Then it went to McLouth, Bourn and now BJ. They can't seem to find a long term solution.
