School Choice - It's Time

See above

You may be surprised by this but I actually agree with most everything you said though I don't think you went far enough with the overall curriculum choices. I would start with reading/reading/reading then go from there. Math is important though I was never very good at it once you get into that part where letters equaled numbers. I think I could learn it today but as a child that part of my brain wouldn't work, sort of how most people can't really get a deep learning of history when they're children, they have to live a while longer and get a little older before they can fully grasp it. I could always do the history stuff but not the math stuff. Sort of the opposite of how most young people function mentally. I guess that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

By the way, given what you've told me, check out one of those "latest greatest things" educational strategies the state of OK was into back when I first started teaching back in the early-mid 1990s. It was called Outcome Based Education or OBE.

This is a short explanation of it.

This is a much longer one.

Our schools for the Most part are awful and not safe at all. Kids come out woefully unprepared and school is viewed by most families as a day care service with zero emphasis on education or accountability. This is one of the reasons I've said for years that is at the heart of what's wrong with our public schools. Parents want their kids to have a baby sitter with no real authority to do anything to discipline them but oh by the way they want them educated too though how that's supposed to happen without any discipline is one you'll have to explain to me. Obviously many parents aren't like that but a LOT of them are, and when any kid sees that little Johnny and little Mary get to do whatever the hell they want (and it ain't learning) with zero consequences what do you think even good ones are going to expect?

We have one elementary school worth a damn in our neighborhood so we use it because it’s nothing but private options from here on out in the 15k a year range per kid. Both of mine are in the gifted program, but that’s still sub par. Are there any religious schools that actually teach kids very much and very well in your area? I'm sure you've looked but I thought I'd ask anyway.
.

Manage business analytics for a company in the construction / building materials sector

I did have a few teaching fellowships in grad school, for what that’s worth (not a lot, lol)

That's interesting. So, you're sort of like a project manager for multiple project managers? Is that fairly close?

Aren't you a Texan? I can't remember for sure. Also, what did you teach in grad school?

It’s more budgeting/forecasting/strategy work than project management . Kind of in the middle of marketing/finance. I spend most of my time on the commercial side of the business because I find it more interesting, but I also oversee people who analyze the operations of the company.

Teaching experience was mostly microeconomics with a cameo in finance.

I’m a New Yorker, but not insulted at all to be accused of being a Texan, haha

Thanks man. I'm glad I didn't make that mistake the other way around. I could have been shot for that. lol

A Manhattan junior high school plans to racially separate students while discussing identity and social justice topics next week, The Post has learned.

The Lower Manhattan Community School will conduct the controversial exercises as part of its mission to “undo the legacy of racism and oppression in this country that impacts our school community,” according to an email sent to parents.

Kids in grades seven and eight will opt into one of five categories, Principal Shanna Douglas wrote in the message.

Whites, Asians, and multi-racial students have their own categories, while African-American and Hispanic students are combined into one group, according to her email.

“On November 23rd and 24th, 7th and 8th graders will explore the question ‘How do our racial identities influence our experiences?’ in affinity groups,” Douglas announced. “An affinity group is a group formed around a shared interest.”

The school has also offered an additional group, which appears to be for those uncomfortable with the format.

That cluster will enter with discussion asking “Why are we even talking about racial identity?” according to the message.

Hey, why not waste a couple days on this nonsense…it isn’t like NYC public middle schoolers have embarrassingly low math and reading proficiencies…

a guided discussion surrounding race doesn't seem a bad idea.
As in family counseling , where it normally starts with each counselee left to discuss the issues in private before encountering their opposite
Isn't this the same principle as a tool to learn how to not talk past one another ?

yeah, let's see how it goes
keep us posted

I dont see a racist in this story
You might want to modify your understanding of the term

I support your right to send your kids to a school with this curriculum if you think it’s a valuable educational experience. Looking forward to the day when we fund backpacks instead of buildings and parents are free to choose the best school for their kids.

" a valuable educational experience " I would view as any thing that makes the world a better place.
For everyone.

Trying to correct the disconnect between white and poc citizenry to my mind would fulfill that definition.

Rest assured free back packs would be greeted with the same disdain school lunch and meals on wheels receives

Thats great. Like I said, I want a system where parents in NYC are free to send their kids to the local public school that segregates children by race for learning activities, or a charter school (with a variety of different curriculums) of their choice (FWIW, in the 18-19 school year, black middle school students in NYC charter schools had a 63.9% math proficiency vs 28.3% for the public district schools).

Not sure when you’d think the backpack funding would be met with disdain. All it would do is open a menu of options…those happy with their local public school could use the voucher to keep their kids right where they are and would be no worse off for having the freedom to choose. There’s plenty of polling data that shows parents with these options overwhelmingly support school choice…

The State owns your childs education.

Didn't you get the memo?

There’s one catholic school and we did that last year when we were
all virtual. Their academics were… weak.

Nothing other than that though so we go private at 6th grade, zero question

In which state do you live? Do they have K12 or Connections Academy where you live? I know there are others now too. Laurel Springs has some online schools. I don't know a whole ton about any of them but I have read/heard good things. They might be worth checking out.

The Republicans have a winning issue sitting in their laps. I hope they use the opportunity to actually expand school choice and improve education options. I’m skeptical. My gut says they’ll instead simply look to ban teaching CRT, which would be a mistake.

I think that message is starting to be heard by the politicians but its certainly always been shared by their voting constituency.

As if sturg thethe Tom cotton and mgt are all going to be happy with funding inner city kids backpacks.

****. They won't even fund meals on wheels or school lunches.

Sturg throws a fit on planting trees in the inner cities.

Let me pass something on. Experience taught me children will find out, no, hunt down what it is you fight to keep from them

Why do you fear conversations of race amongst the kids or even worse at home?

That is some Freud 101 ****
