School Openings

AND sturg quote: "I believe this past year was nearly $16k per student"

Why do you suppose DeVoss and the charter school owners and supporters want to get their hands on the public schools???

I suppose money. To tell the truth though, if we're spending it anyway, I just want it in the hands of whoever will do the best job.

I have no problem with that, but how do YOU define the "whoever will do the best job" part?

Kids proficiency in some form of knowledge challenge. This may vary based on the specific child as not everyone learns the same way which you're well aware of.

Our barometer right now shows public education is failing.

Just like with the police, education needs to be reformed in the United States. There is an opportunity here, I think. We likely won't take it.

From a list of highest GDP 1. USA, 24% of the World's GDP.

Of course the USA should spend the most on Education because they make the most money. But they don't.

So they are poorly funded because they dont spend the first most in the world per student?

Yes. They should be spending the most. and by a healthy amount. If the US spend the right amount of money we'd be in a better place educationally.

That Administrators make too much money and Schools are forced to spend money on stupid things because of Government contracts.

Beautiful. I agree 100%

With a caveat of course that an administrator that runs a successful school should be paid handsomely.

Education will never be solved until teachers unions are broken. You have to incentivize the best to teach and that doesnt happen now.

And finally, until parents hold their children accountable then nothing will change.

This is correct.

Your suggestion to throw even more money at the problem is incorrect.

We've been doing that for years. It's not helping.

Bust up the unions. Eliminate dept of education. Invest in local schools

And I agree. I teach at a community college. We get students every semester right out of high school who can barely tie their shoe laces academically speaking. Some can't even to that. I would love to reform our educational system but as Dalyn said it won't happen. Too much politics involved and everybody loves to assume too much about too many things without knowing what they're talking about. As a finance person do you ONLY look at the bottom line of monetary matters?

I said the same thing with the virus about the country and social programs etc

Instead we rushed to “reopen the economy” instead

No, I look at how uneducated our kids are right now. We are seeing it in the streets daily now.

Eliminating the unions will only make matters worse and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like the teachers unions.

I totally agree with your statement in bold font. The problem is at its root, most people are lazy with the work ethic of a doorpost. They are like the Queen song, they want it all and they want it now but they aren't willing to work for it. The same goes for their kids. The kids want A grades for D effort and their parents believe and do whatever their kids tell them to believe/do. Eliminating the legal defense provided by the unions will finish destroying what is already a system teetering on the edge.

Have you ever tried to make 35+ kids in one room behave and learn something they didn't want to behave or learn with very little, if any backup for your disciplinary system? I have sent kids to the principals office for being aholes only to have them laugh at the principal on the way back to the classroom, AND the principal came out and heard them laughing at him, which caused him to threaten them even more, which of course made them laugh even louder. In the end, he blamed me for the disciplinary problem. This is an absolutely true story. Believe it or don't, that's up to you.

So, what would YOU do in such a situation?

No, I look at how uneducated our kids are right now. We are seeing it in the streets daily now.

So, what's your solution? I mean the actual bare bones solution, not just let's break up the unions, take away all the teacher's legal defenses, give the parents, and the kids, and the administrators even more say and just assume things will get better???
