The number of Chinese students here has never been close to 500,000 and has been declining. It is now about 250,000. It will likely decline quite a bit in the next school year because students and their families don't want to be jerked around. Their futures are too important to tolerate that. Going to a university is a big investment. They have excellent options in China and elsewhere. They have a culture that values education and science. It's a shame that their presence here has been and will continue to diminish. Among other things we did a nice bit of business skimming off the creme de la creme and keeping them here. I have several colleagues in my department who come from China. They are all absolute ballers and great colleagues.

From a global perspective what is happening here doesn't matter much. Science nowadays is very much an international endeavor. It will get done because it is well rewarded in the marketplace. But the geographical distribution of where the best scholars are located is going to change.
