I get that international law is at best a sort of guideline for us, but using our military to invade an ally to steal their land feels illegal even in spirit. What is legal in this case? Who sets what is legal?
Why are the Netherlands an ally? What do they do that benefits us?I get that international law is at best a sort of guideline for us, but using our military to invade an ally to steal their land feels illegal even in spirit.
They don’t antagonize us, they allow us to freely use their sovereign territory for defense operations, they have a stable government that doesn’t disrupt our national security in any way, we have a written alliance on the books with them, they are part of a larger bloc of allies in Europe, we enjoy a friendly, cooperative relationship with them… Do you need more? Why are the Netherlands an ally? What do they do that benefits us?

We're NATO allies.
We can't take their shit.
This is a deeply fucked up way to look at geopolitics and is the type of worldview that is susceptible to justifying any aggression on behalf of the United States. And you compare this with being the singular power that allows them to have a stable border? Are you serious?
They aren't mad at us and thats hte big win here?
They 'allow' us to use their territory? They only have their territory because we protect it.
This whole idea that we have 'allies' is a joke. We have protectorates and we aren't compensated for that protection.

I’d say no, but there’s still a pretty massive gap between disrupting a hostile nation’s ability to make nuclear weapons and taking an ally’s land. Was it legal to bomb Irans nuclear facilities?
What looks to be the end result of that illegal action? Seems to be potential for a lot of good here....

I’m once again compelled to ask exactly what you oppose of oppressive nations such as China if this is how you feel about the role of military and financial strength on the world stage. Is an action only bad if it’s taken by a country you think is bad?Yes, it’s our tax dollars and blood holding this whole thing together. That gives us significant leverage to do what we want.

I support an independent Greenland above all else, but let’s not mistake shitty with tyrannical.Interesting take and yet you seem lukewarm to our actions in Venezuela.
Does it matter if the Netherlands has been shitty ot the people of Greenland?
Based on the Netherlands history towards them I think Greenlanders would love to be independent and have a new standalone agreement with the US where their citizens would greatly benefit.I support an independent Greenland above all else, but let’s not mistake shitty with tyrannical.
They’re not doing this, though. You might like to speculate about them doing these things, but with the exception of Taiwan, which has been an ongoing issue for decades now, China has not really encroached on the sovereignty of other nations in the way you’re prepared to excuse the United States doing with Greenland.I live in the real world and I oppose my enemy doing these things but while they are doing these things not bound by stupid concepts of international law I will not be bound by it as well and allow them to gain strength and challenge us in the future.
The world crumbles if we are not far and away the worlds superpower.
