Selling At the Deadline

I think we’ve all seen enough to know that this team isn’t very good and isn’t going anywhere this season.

So, the question is who do you sell off? We should be able to unload Will Smith’s contract, as good relievers are at a premium come the trade deadline and he’s only got one more year after this. Half-seasons of Martin and Morton should each net us a decent middling prospect I would imagine.

Do you trade Freeman and get what would reasonably be your best return on a tradeable player, or do you try to sign him long term?

What about Swanson? He’s got another year left on his deal and he’s a solid SS. Not sure how many contending teams are in need of a nice, if unspectacular SS, but maybe someone dreams on him enough to give us a few nice pieces?

Discuss.

You trade him then resign him!

There’s almost no way the Braves sell, even if it’s the most logical option at that point.

Does anyone else get the impression that Liberty just doesnt care, just doesnt know, or maybe they are smart enough to sell. I have this feeling that they are getting ready to sell at a huge profit and concentrate on the Battery.

Trading Freeman could get weird since he has 10 and 5 rights. However, if Freeman is done as a Brave a trade increases his value because he won’t have draft pick compensation attached to him.

Trading Swanson makes since if the plan is to chase one of the free agent SS this winter.

Agree that it is all premature. I think we will have a better understanding by July 1.
Im coming to believe that FF will be moving on. Doubt he gets traded tho.
I do agree with Cy that Swanson is probably history too with all the high caliber SS coming on the market.
The SP depth not being moved to improve the lineup is a question in my mind as well.
Will Smith may have value later in the season, just dont understand the Tomlin, Dayton, Newk usage at all.

I'm as disappointed as anyone, but we 3.5 games back on June 2nd. This seems premature

We’re 1/3 of the way through the season. What’s going to change over the final four months that hasn’t fixed itself by now? The offense might get luckier, but are we going to be able to replace Ozuna’s bat AND potentially add another one? Are we going to be able to add a quality starter, and will the starting pitching we do have magically not suck? Are we going to be able to add bullpen depth?

All of those things are possible, but that sure is a lot of possibilities you’re asking to come true. I’m not sure we have the resources to substantially upgrade the team where it needs upgrading, so we need to hope the pitchers we do have get their **** together, and some of the hitters we’re riding due to injuries to play way above their head for 4 more months. Nothing really points in that direction.

I think the offense is going to be fine for the most part. I do see us picking up a non scrub for LF that hopefully won't cost much.

The issue is going to be the rotation. It's a combination of dog crap starters and dog crap management of those starters.

And the lack of bullpen depth is also an issue when 3 of your 5 starters typically shouldn’t see past the 4th or 5th inning in a normal start/game. That isn’t unique in this day and age, but teams that adhere to that philosophy (as they should) usually have a deep, quality pen.

Yeah, I'm OK with our hitting; not amazing as it was last year, since we're one bat short, but it's going to be fine with regression.

And the starting pitching has been uneven, though trending up. And we've taken some steps in the bullpen, though all of them haven't hit the roster yet.

But I can't shake the feeling that we had an 80%+ outcome last year and are taking our lumps with a 20%- outcome this year.

It could turn around, but we need to hit one of those 34-6 patches like the 90s Braves used to have.

While it's probably still too early to make any "major" moves (that don't have to do with LF in the unlikely event Ozuna's money is freed-up), I have a really tough time imagining someone offering enough of a return for Freeman for AA to deal with the fallout that would follow. On top of that, I find it even harder to believe that they'll actually sell.

Not saying it wouldn't make sense if things keep going this way - just find it pretty hard to believe that they will.

The only way I could see them selling is if we drop 6 of 7 to the Mets this month and we go into July down something like 10-12 games with at least two teams ahead of us. And even then they would probably only look to flip a couple of guys on one-year deals. You'd have to think Morton would be an attractive piece for a contender.

But the alternative scenario where we win 6 of 7 against the Mets this month and we go into July up 3 games looking for an impact bat and a RH closer at the deadline is much more exciting to think about.

Regarding the Ozuna case, there is really not much the Braves can do at the moment but it will get better shortly. He is, as far as I know still on the 10 day DL. Expect him to move to 60 day soon. At that point insurance will probably kick in. He does have to stay on the 40 man roster for insurance to apply. That will then give MLB more time to decide his suspension period. At any rate the cOF situation could be addressed soon.
