Shelby Miller

The old saw goes "never trade an everyday MLB player for a pitcher"

in this case D-Backs traded 2
Ah, the genius of Tony LaRussa

They lost the trade before the ink was dry

His peripherals didn't support his strong year last year...but they also gave no indication that he would collapse this badly.

Shelby had a 3.02 ERA on a 3.45 FIP. Not all that crazy of a difference.

Shelby's nowhere this bad, but is a mid 3's ERA type pitcher. What Arizona didn't seem to factor isn is that he's a flyball pitcher going to a huge homers park with one of the worst defensive catchers in baseball. Its a recipe for disaster. If they are going to spend resources, they need groundball pitchers and/or strikeout guys.

I think that's the crux of it. Miller isn't this bad, but, like you say, he's a flyball pitcher in a hitters' park. His HR/FB is almost double what it was last year. Bad location or hitters' park? Probably a little of both. I think the other thing is that Miller throws a lot of pitches. He doesn't seem to have the ability to entice weak contact. He strikes out a fair number of guys, but it usually takes a lot of pitches for him to do that.

Well I wouldnt say that. Shelby has always been an up and down pitcher. The Cardinals were smart not to run him out there over and over to ruin his ERA. 2013 I dont think he even made their playoff rotation despite a 3.06 ERA and it wasnt because he was hurt or that the Cardinals were loaded with ace pitching. Shelby had a down second half and then moved on to a new team that plays in a severe hitters park. Greinke's ERA is double what it was last year too playing in that park. Pretty sure the DBacks are just an incompetent organization because their front office has said some bat **** crazy things in the last year. Personally my prediction was a 4.50 ERA for Miller.

Meh on Greinke...Chavez Ravine can be a banbox too

From that stats I am looking at it shows the DBacks stadium 7th most hitter friendly and Dodger stadium at 26th. I bet Miller will be just fine when he leaves Arizona and hooks up with a competent pitching coach.
