You would advise against bringing protection in responding to someone that is mentally unstable? I get your general point about wanting to bring in a mental health professional, but I fail to see how a mentally unstable person with a weapon shouldn't be considered a threat.
 
How's about he doesn't have a firearm weapon - methinks if

a) he didnt have a gun
b) we wouldn't need a team of good guys with guns then
c) we could afford a mental health specialist that specializes in suicide threats.

Speaking of flush with money
Wondering
a) how much it costs to arm and man a SWAT Team
b) how often does a community actually need a SWAT Team
c) are SWAT Teams really the most cost effective means of policing

I haven't seen anyone advocate not coming prepared for the worst. But a SWAT Team vs a suicide threat -- c'mon man
 
I bet some of the residents of Baltimore would love if there were some more Swat teams on the ground right now.
 
Perhaps the proliferation of inner city SWAT Teams IS the problem. Something tells me inner city life is far more dangerous since law enforcement felt the need to occupy the cities instead of police them.

Lie everything else, follow the money. My guess is the weapons industry and their lobbying arm the NRA are in it FIFA style deep

And now the inmates are running the asylum and the people of Baltimore are praying for the police to come back.

I posted an interview with an urban historian a couple weeks back detailing the demise of inner city Baltimore. But, I guess it is easier to parrot the conventional wisdom spouted Bill O'Reilly and the Fox Crowd - than to actually ... try to find a solution to the problem. Not just use a "bigger hammer"

I would suppose it's standard procedure with the mentally unstable who are threatening either themselves or other people with a weapon while they are held up inside a building.

Still, there are several facts that are left out by this story. Like:

1. Who actually called the police? The girlfriend says she didn't.
2. What were the police told about the situation by the person who contacted the police?
3. Did the victim have a history of violence?

So far it's a lot of speculation with very litte information.

1. GIrlfriend called a non-emergency number that florida has that can forcibly commit someone.
2. She told them he was trying to kill himself and didn't feel threaten.
3. Not according to his family and friends.

1. A non emergency # is not necessarily the police.
2. What she told the non-emergency # is not necessarily the exact story the police were told.
3. I'm sure his friends and family paint him as a saint. However, the overwhelming large percentage of alcoholics generally have a record.

1. I've seen no reports indicating anyone else called 9/11. So I assume the number they called routed the call to the cops.
2. That's fair, but the cops I'm sure asked her if she was OK and I'm sure she told them the situation.

There's literally no evidence of what you're theorizing and just speculating against the facts.

If he didn't have a record in FL, then that's fine. Your original article made no mention of that however.

I am not theorizing anything other than the fact people are jump to conclusions based off news articles with limited information, much of which is coming from the family and girlfriend of the victim.
