Sherman: Braves offered Heyward 80M after 2013

Spinning ex-Braves into villians, it's a family tradition! :)

Braves have not said one negative thing about Heyward since he was traded. I think its clear that they always wanted him to be a Braves for a long time but just didn't agree with how the Heyward camp valued him.

You really should change your username the way you're so often taking shots at Heyward and Heyward defenders. Anti-Heyward would seem more accurate.

I'll keep it, no need to change it.

I dont hate Heyward, good kid, but he isnt near as good as some of the Heyward defenders like holden, zito, you, BRule, Cy, wup and others think he is.

I just didn't care for the hatred directed towards the front office especially those that said they were snake in the grass liars.

I will always root for Heyward to succeed. I just wish posters were accountable for things they have said in the past that were clearly wrong.

The vitriol towards the front office wasn't justified. It was evident at the time that everyone was acting defiantly towards the rebuild. There was also a pretty apparent smear campaign done against the Wren family (that the entire Wren family bitterly resents). Many posters didn't appreciate the implication that the 2013 team was a mistake.

But at this point it all just needs to end. If you don't want to give Heyward 150M, it doesn't mean you hate Heyward. In that same vein, Shelby doesn't have to suck to justify disagreeing with trading Heyward. At some point, the politics of the offseason will go away and we can finally embrace cheering for our fun, little mediocre yet surprising ball club and accept the truth that the future is a lot brighter than it was a few months ago.

Well said, especially the last part.

So nobody cares to speculate whether or not Heyward was lying by saying he wasn't offered a deal until hte end of 2012?

The way I interpreted Heyward's comment from this Winter about not being offered an extension was that they didn't talk to him about an extension after the 2014 season. So I don't think he lied. Didn't he publicly acknowledge that he was approached about an extension after the 2013 season? I seem to remember him saying something about the Braves having one quick conversation with his agent, but nothing developed form the initial conversation.

Great post, chop.

Future is bright and some people cant get over the fact a 230 hitter with an under 300 OBP is gone, smh.

No, some on here act like Heyward was never offered an extension ever.

What I posted earlier was a quotation from Heyward stating they hadn't discussed a contract extension since the end of 2012 which seems to contradict what Sherman is reporting now.

Further, this is from a Q&A with Jason after the deal:

Q. You said you’ve gone to the Braves a few times to let them know you were interested in staying long term. Did they basically say, we’ll get back to you, or was there even any reaction?

A. No, in 2012 when we had the discussion – and I mean brief, it was a 10-minute conversation between my representatives and the Braves – we let them know that I wanted to be here a long time. And the conversation was basically shut down then. And never revisited. So again, the two-year deal (in February 2014) came from me as far as not wanting to worry about that, not wanting to worry about money and performance and whatnot. I wanted to go play baseball.

Im not sure how this isn't obvious?

'Til there's attribution to what Sherman wrote, I'm not going to give it any credence. Heyward is on the record with what he said.

Thats fine I suppose. I tend to believe seasoned baseball writers especially those that report for other teams. What incentive does Sherman have report inaccurate information? Or is this more of the Braves feeding deceptive reports?

Is it obvious based on what Jason actually said in the offseason or just obvious from your clear anti-Braves agenda?

Its pretty clear that everyone could be telling the truth here. They could have offered him the contract in the short discussion after the 2013 season and then never revisited after the 2 yr deal was signed.

Since when did Sherman's track record become so good that we take what he says as the gospel? It seems to me that some here are fishing to call Heyward a liar.
