Every reason. It's about him spinning things for PR.
What reason would Sherman or his sources have to lie? The more plausible explanation is that Heyward was salty about being traded or perhaps for the way he felt he was treated. Or he was simply trying to saving face among the ATL fans by trying not look like a greedy athlete who turned down lots of guaranteed money to stay with his home team. Or it's possible Heyward simply got his dates mixed up.
This is too easy to answer. He didn't want to look like a selfish jerk. The best way to avoid that is to make the team look like they didn't try very hard, so he can look like he is the reasonable one.

I think the idea of assuming malicious intent is moronic.

It's not sides, exactly, is it? Jason Heyward said what he said. Sherman wrote a line in a column, not attributed to anyone. It could have been a Braves FO person. It could have been someone from another club repeating something he'd heard. There's no reason to read any more into it, IMO.
Of course it's sides. On one side a contract wasn't offered and another it is. I believe a contract was offered and some on this board seem to believe it wasnt.

Nope, players should always take the most money they can.

And may be it's the opposite? May be Heyward was upset and said some things in a bitter moment. Who kows? But where there is smoke, there is normally fire. I find it quite convenient for the Heyward "defenders" to say Heyward wasn't upset about the situation when he clearly took the time to make a point that he was never offered an extension. What exactly is it about Heyward that makes him more trustworthy than the front office or in this case Joel Sherman? Or did you simply choose to believe Heyward because he was/is your favorite player?
Even if Heyward did exaggerate the truth in a moment of bitterness, I honestly couldn't care less. It happens. I wouldn't find that it affects his character in any way whatsoever. I just find it quite funny that the Heyward defenders will fight to the death to defend any sort of slight against him.
The average uninformed fan likely does. And those fans compromise the majority of a team's fanbase. Have you not heard any sort sports talk and listened to the fans call in? A lot of fans are fickle and tend to be a little extreme. Do you not remember the sort of backlash Glavine received for taking more money to sign with the Mets? I'm pretty sure cajun still hates Glavine for that.
