Slippy's Early Opening Day Projections

No one said you were wrong. It is a general question that could lead to a fair debate.

When is it right to allow Baldwin to be in the bigs.. How short of a leash do you give Murphy to turn the last year and a half around? All interesting talking points that could be easily argued either way.

TDA missed a lot of time in 2023. Murphy missed a lot of time last year. I think maintaining our depth behind the plate is the most important factor to consider.

I’m actually not worried about Murphy. He had a bad year after missing 2 months with an oblique and wasn’t the same the rest of the year. He didn’t suddenly forget how to play. There’s a good article, even though it’s Bowman, on mlb about him from a couple days ago.

I think you at least give Murph til June, Baldwin's clock start. Full time starting, no back and forth. Time to get in a rhythm. Dont think Murphy forgot how to play baseball all of a sudden.

I think you're more or less spot on, but I quoted this section of the roster to highlight what went wrong this offseason. That bench doesn't have a single MLB caliber player on it, and even calling them AAAA guys may be generous. The back 2/5 of that rotation are fringe MLB players at best.

That is not acceptable for a team at the peak of its competitive window.

Reynaldo Lopez was a fringe starter going into the season last year. Striders due back a month into the season. If the offense doesnt collectively **** the bed all at the same time we should be able to be competitive in games even with fringe starters.

I think Baldwin comes out hot and gets called up and has the TDA role the rest of the year so that will improve the bench, the rest of the spots will still suck of course.

I agree that the back of the rotation and the bench are shaky. The positive of the current roster construction is that it's not currently maxed out. If things go well Strider's return would punt the 5th starter. Baldwin coming up would dump Tromp and provide a lefty bat for the bench. A trade for a SS would move Arcia to the bench. There's a lot of flexibility and room for growth for a roster with high playoff odds.

Ok time to rebuild with Murphy down. Lots of LH on the roster

When Strider comes back Holmes to the pen and Hernandez Optioned to AAA

Murphy replaces Tromp when he returns. Tromp DFA

Acuna replaces Kelenic when he returns. Kelenic Optioned

Roster is starting to look pretty strong.

Only change I'd make is I think Kelenic stays when Acuna comes back.

I think that would be a mistake. Kelenic isn't going to play with Profar Harris and Acuna healthy. It would be better to stop his clock and have him play everyday in AAA. If there's an injury Kelenic can easily be called back up.

And he's probably the only other OF we have that can play CF.

Marisnick can play a good CF. White can play CF as well. We made a sizable investment in Kelenic and the best way to maximize that investment is to make sure he's getting everyday ABs. He's not gonna play ahead of Acuna Harris Profar Olson or Ozuna. Unless we think Snit is giving everyone in this group a day off a week (wouldn't be the worst idea) Kelenic should be in AAA working on his swing and preparing to start.

You really think Cairo over Nick Allen?

Yeah. Cairo is a Rule V pick. If he doesn't stick all year on the team we have to send him back.

Allen could probably be kept if he's DFA. They are both glove first SS. Their bats are both questionable at best but Cairo has a pretty good on base ability.

yeah.. I don't see any reason the Braves need to worry about Kelenic's clock.. they already control him until he is 30.. and he isn't that good at 25.

I don't think there's a need to worry about his clock but there's no need to need to burn it needlessly. If there are MLB ABs available for Kelenic he should definitely be up. We made a large investment in Kelenic. We should try and make the most of it.

After today's roster moves I think it's a done deal.

Anderson has a better chance of being DFA'd than being in the rotation.
