The question is do most illegal immigrants stay in the country after committing a crime? Can't have an arrest if they go back to their home country. A good example would be cartel members. They don't stick around after a crime is done.

Yeah, the fentanyl brought here usually doesn't involve a lot of arrests compared to what gets snuck in.
 
Prior to 2016 most migrants were from Mexico or Latin America.

The migrant that crosses the border today is from all over the world.

There is a good study of the geography of fentanyl addiction. It correlates with the volume of legal imports. Legal imports are an excellent proxy for fentanyl supply.

Maybe - Just maybe it correleates because port based imports are a fraction of total that come in through all sections of the border.

Why would you think proximity to the southern border matters? You think the drugs only travel a few miles after they enter the country?

It is risky/expensive to transport within the country. So the smugglers try to sell as much as possible near the point of entry.

Teh most risk is transporting the drugs through a regulated port of entry.
