Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

those gaps between blue and red states on basic indicia such as homicide rates, life expectancy and per capita GDP just keep growing and growing

death and poverty by ideology

eh...california attracts a disporportionate number of immigrants...the immigrant population in california is better educated than the nation born...additionally, the positive net flow of young college educated people has resumed to california after a brief interruption

now i believe california should do more to increase its supply of affordable housing...it should strive to work for people with below-average incomes as well as it works for the highly educated and highly paid

so i decry nimbyism as a bad ideology

but i decry ignorance and anti-intellectualism even more...those are the thangs that cause red states to lag behind in the basic metrics and they are causing those gaps to get even larger

They can't quite compete with NY on people fleeing..

Liberal policies for the win!

eh

i dunno about that...it certainly seems to coincide with a healthier, better educated, more wealthy and longer-lived populace

with a lower homicide rate as a bonus!!!

nothing like waking up in the morning and the odds of being murdered or dying being lower!!

the actual for real odds no less!!

Gollee... almost 5 murders per day in California. Luckily there are a lot of people who it can happen to!

Way til you see how this breaks down by race

eh...folks in blue states probably have a better understanding of the difference between counting stats (home runs) and rate stats (home runs per at bat)

I wish women felt better about psycho homeless guy weilding a knife in the subway station as she looks around and calculates he will probably stab someone else

Cool. Now do it by race?

i discussed this a few pages back

the racial composition of blue and red states collectively is not much different...not enough to account for the significant and growing gap in murder rates between blue and red states

as best as i can tell the difference mainly reflects three interrelated thangs: ignorance, low levels of education and the prevalence of cracker culture (which is distinctly anti-intellectual and violent)

as an aside it should be noted african american culture is mainly derived from cracker culture

there are a couple books that I would recommend to anyone trying to understand the cultural origins of some of these regional differences:

Albion's Seed by David Fisher

Cracker Culture by David McWhiney

In some ways, the great hope for the advancement of red states is the migration from blue states, which hopefully will transform some of the anti-intellectual aspects of culture in those areas. It won't happen overnight. But it is happening. Especially in certain urban areas: Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, Raleigh, Orlando, Dallas, Houston. Those areas are being transformed at a rapid clip. The hinterland much more slowly if at all. But the urban areas carry demographic heft.

The phenomenon of the hinterland's resentment of the more dynamic urban areas is not new. But it receives a new expression these days with social media and we see quite a bit of it on these very boards. New York and Los Angeles are far from perfect and no claims they are. The obsession that some people have with saying they are awful places mainly reflects a certain insecurity. A very old insecurity but one that gets expressed in new ways. Libs of Tik Tok and all that jazz.

First off imagine believing this.

Secondly imagine thinking about this as much as you do.

Third, no one’s believing you no matter how often you spew it. We all know the underlying reasoning and if you don’t I suggest a visit to Mississippi, Louisiana, and Atlanta proper

We would happily ship out our young black population to you guys, but I’m gonna guess the migrants will probably give you your own micro dose

Yeah, sure!

Imagine thinking someone cares enough about your opinion to read this diatribe

You have a stellar record,
So I’m sure it’s all on point
