NY governor and NYC mayor to ban masks (yes, those same masks) on subways because of the constant antisemitism attacks

This surprises me as I was expecting the voters to punish the RDS led party for his abortion legislation, since it is election poison

Wait. An executive can veto stuff?

What is the ****ing point of prison if we don’t expect and prepare them to come out and become productive members of society? You’d might as well stop calling it the Department of Corrections if you solely intend to punish them until they fall into recidivism.

This isn’t giving any prisoners special privileges, it’s affording them the same opportunity to get an education that others in the state receive.

I'm comfortable with making prison punishment for breaking the law. They can read books, etc but shouldn't have the same benefit of a subsidized education as law abiding citizens do

What type of societal and economic benefit do you get out of penalizing convicts past their sentence, though? In-state tuition encourages citizens of the state to attend their Universities and subsequently contribute to the economy in those states, right? There’s not a single would-be criminal in the state of Florida who will be deterred from committing a crime because they will lose their discount on education. But there could be an ex-convict that will not contribute as meaningfully in the future because he decides college is too expensive.

Is there only so much Pell grant money or is it basically unlimited? The reason I ask is bc with inmates having nothing but time, they would sign up in droves.

While the overall effect of education is to reduce crime there are some interesting cases where it works the other way:

Conversely, there is also some evidence that education can also increase the earnings from crime as certain skills acquired in school may be inappropriately used for criminal activities. Levitt and Lochner (2001) find that males with higher scores on mechanical information tests had increased offence rates. Lochner (2004) also estimates that across cohorts, increases in average education are associated with 11% increase in white-collar arrest rates (although this estimated effect is not statistically significant).

Sam Bankman-Fried, for example, probably learned a few thangs in school that he applied to his criminal career!
