Mahmdani seems to think our institutions are rotted to the core and need to be dismantled or overhauled.

Muslims are valued members of the community. It is something to be recognized and respected. It should be as much of a rite of passage for NY politicians to cultivate ties to that community as to any other ethnic or religious group.

You'd be amazed at how diverse NY is. One relatively obscure group that I have some friends are the Bengalis. People from Bangladesh. There are over 100,000 of them in NY City. The family I know are in the suburbs. They own my favorite Indian restaurant. Abdullah, the father, is a very cool dude. In spite of being a practicing Muslim, he enjoys a glass of wine. He and his wife have raised two wonderful and very successful children. Everyone in that family is an absolute baller.

There is a Little Bangladesh in the city (actually three--one each in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx). Here is an article about one of them:
