One thing I’ve found most fascinating and depressing about the political discourse in recent years is the extent to which we vilify the moderates in government. The root cause seems to be the adversarial nature of our politics that I’ve decried a lot recently, but I recently saw a post about Susan Collins that made me think of it more. Collins, Murkowski, Manchin and Sinema get more vitriol from the majority of the country than almost any other senators, and it’s owed to the fact that they occasionally break from their party line on decisions. This has led to this bizarro world where their own party complains that they aren’t “pure” or whatever, while the opposing party complains that they don’t just automatically break ranks. While I find it a bit silly that we frequently find ourselves in situations where literally one or two senators basically control so much of our policy, I find it gross that they get this sort of backlash for not being hyper partisan.
