Spring Training 2015

This absolutely astonishes me. Range is about the same, but (and this might be the other context in which I can type this with a straight face) Johnson is a better fielder. Granted, Johnson at his worst at the plate (.251 BA in 2011) is worse than Callaspo at his best, (.288, also in 2011) but that’s about the strongest argument you can make.

I can’t even conceive of a scenario where Callaspo is likely to bounce back even to what CJ was last year, and I fully expect at least something of an improvement from CJ.

Don’t mean to sound dickish here, I’m just trying to see the argument.

I am not really interested in defending Callaspo anymore after hearing about his history of domestic violence. So this is just for information purposes only, Callaspo is bad at second base as you know but at third base Callaspo has been mostly good unlike CJ. And their range at third isn't rated about the same (see Callaspo's fangraph's page here for his range numbers). Callaspo has consistently showed good range at third in the Majors while CJ is one of the worst in that area at third (see CJ's fangraph's page here for his range numbers). Chris Johnson has a -38.2 RngR and -60 DRS for his career at third while Callaspo has a 16.7 RngR and 11 DRS for his career at third.

That said, I thought most fans issue with Callaspo was more his history of domestic violence off the field. Personally, I could care less whether we keep him or not as I don't particularly like him or CJ for that matter. I have never liked the idea of playing Callaspo at second because he is pretty terrible there. The only use he has is at the corner infield spots, so basically third base.

How many more months of membership fees do we have to dump in this place to get a GD Mark Bowman bead of sweat dropping emoticon!!!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!??

At this point, I'm more worried about his continued history of domestic violence on the field.

I agree, KJ is the only one with power in that mix. I would think they'd want the possibility of some kind of power on the bench. But they are moving in a supposed different direction.

Don't get me wrong - I definitely prefer the OBP/contact/speed route the organization seems to be moving towards - but if it's a choice between the Callaspo we've seen thus far and KJ, I'd much prefer KJ.

I agree with many that given the direction the new leadership team embarked upon during the off-season, signing Callaspo was a little odd (as was signing Markakis). As a player, I've always thought Callaspo is alright. Switch-hitter. Some position flexibility. $3 million is a little steep for him given the team's short and long term needs and his current level of ability, BUT when you realize that we are set to pay Chris Johnson twice as much for 2015 (with an escalating cost in future seasons), the Callaspo deal by comparison isn't that horrid.

Things just worked out differently than Wren & Company expected, and they've said as much. Don't think you could have realistically expected that KJ and several other stopgap options would have been available on minor league deals, and they didn't want to force things with Peterson/Peraza if they didn't have to. As it turns out they could've passed on both Callaspo and KJ it appears.

Like you said though, it wasn't bad for a $3 million insurance policy - we've seen worse ones before.

Me too. He's been my favorite player since 2005, and I haven't given up on him. Plus, he's made a very good living being mediocre. So I have to give him full credit. :happy0157:

@DOBrienAJC: #Braves now have Wandy penciled in for 4th starter spot. Fredi indicated other candidates now competing for one spot, the 5th spot

No Fredi, you're going to give fat boy a heart attack!

Seriously, this report goes against what Bowman has said for weeks about Stults being locked in while all but ignoring and playing down Wandy's chances. And that was before apparently creating his own trade rumor about him without a source (I say that is likely because of the timing of it and how unheard of it is for a NRI being traded in ST). If this is true then it seems Bowman and DOB have flip-flopped their roles as it is usually DOB with egg on his face and Bowman correcting his reports.

Good. I think Wandy has a much better game than Stultz... not saying he won't make the 5th spot, though. Either way, I'm happy with... Teheran, Minor (When healthy?), Miller, Wandy, Wood.

Yea, while I supported signing Stults to a minor league deal for depth in case Wandy didn't make it back, etc. Wandy is clearly the better pitcher when healthy, Bowman argues that they're basically the same pitcher but that isn't true. Further, Wandy's velocity seems to be back already this ST while Stults velocity has continued to decline. I saw Stults trying his best to make due with a 86-87 mph fastball a number of times last year too. Which makes me wonder how much he has left in the tank.

I am not ruling out Stults filling the 5th starter role till Minor is back. Whatever the case, I hope Mike Minor makes it back okay and isn't out very long.
