Spring Training 2015

If so, that is stupid because the two run homer today was against a righty and his previous so called bad outing was where he got no defense. You know what you get with Outman, someone that dominates lefties and isn't good vs righties. He is a lefty specialist and a good one at that. If we keep dropping good relief pitchers over ST performances we'll end up with a weak bullpen.

Thanks for posting that. I had wondered.

I’d still rather see Olivera in Left. Feels like a position of greater need in the short, but especially long-term.

I DO expect at least some bounce back from CJ, and I’d love to see Peterson and Peraza in the IF together next year. Or sooner.

While left field is an option for Olivera, the Braves are said to believe third is his best position at this point. So if we sign him I'd prefer to let him start where he feels most comfortable, at least for now, then maybe move him to left field down the road if needed. This way he can just focus on offense rather than playing and learning a new position straight away too.

If any of you are aspiring writers and would like to contribute, drop me a line. I unfortunately don't have enough time to post daily most of the time, but would like to have more regular content for folks to read and debate.

I am warming up to the idea of trading for JBJ if the price isn't high. I am concerned with our outfield because our projected starters in RF, CF, and LF are all weak with regard to range. That is outside of EYJ/Perez, in EY Jr's case he just doesn't look good in CF like he does in LF. Perez is fine as far as range in CF goes but it sounds like Fredi has all but decided on giving CF and leadoff to EY Jr.

To sum it up, Markakis-EYJ-Gomes outfield is too similar to Markakis-BJ-Gattis outfield as far as defense IMO. JBJ would at least make it easier on our pitchers because he's at least a very good defender in CF. And it's not like he'd need to hit a ton to hit better than EY. Jr's track record.

Hard to argue with that logic, except that I think we’ll get more offense from CJ than from Gomes and partner to be named. That said, I remember what a stint in left did to Chipper’s knees….

As long as CJ is still on the team, I'd still give him starts at third vs lefties. So if Olivera is signed, then for those games I'd play Olivera at second base. That would give Peterson some off days vs lefties, but assuming he's hitting lefties fine I'd give him some reps in left field where he can play there when Olivera and CJ are both in the line-up. Peterson has a good arm and is athletic enough to add left field to one of the positions he plays.

I definitely like JBJ, but it's an unlikely match. He has minor league options, so our leverage would be limited. Could take a name from our top 10 prospect list to get a JBJ deal done. One from the group of Victorino / Craig / Nava is who Boston NEEDS to move, so that's where we could get value. Our current, short-term need is a LHH platoon partner for Gomes as an upgrade from Terdo / KJ. Only Nava would fit that particular need.

The Dodgers got bad news on Ryu's shoulder tonight, so they could be looking for a SP. A quality LHRP like Paco Rodriguez could be a reasonable match for Wandy.

I don't get the feeling the Dodgers will "bottom-feed" for a SP if the news on Ryu is THAT bad. They wasted time (and money) on McCarthy and Anderson already this winter trying to bargain shop. If the news is bad enough, that could conceivably be the push they needed to include Seager in a Hamels deal, and even potentially pull the trigger on Olivera. They'd be more apt to find a taker for Uribe or Kendrick than we would CJ (possibly even another SP better than Wandy for depth), and they could just outbid everybody for Desmond next winter to replace Seager.

Yep, if Ryu is out for a month or two then Wandy could make sense. If he needs major shoulder surgery, they'd be smarter to aim higher than Wandy. We'll see what the news is in the next couple of days.

Probably wishful thinking, but I'm also hoping that the Dodgers might back off on Olivera if they feel they need to dedicate resources towards replacing Ryu.

I thought about that, and then came to the conclusion that it won't matter for them.

Think I'm one of the only AJ fans around. He may be a jerk sometimes but he brings fire and life to a team that needs it. And he's a pretty good ball player when healthy.

I just worry about his reputation in that what results from his "fire". I do agree the team needs some spunk though and maybe he can contribute. Being comfortable is not always a good thing.

When the Braves and Cardinals began discussing the trade that eventually sent right fielder Jason Heyward to St. Louis, the Braves first asked for Martinez. Mozeliak refused, and the Braves accepted Miller instead.

Would anybody here have drastically preferred Martinez over Miller?

I think people (executives and writers) who make statements like this months after a trade happens are way out of line. The only possible outcome of this statement is to mess with these guys heads.

Nobody knows if this is true, or just spin to make the St. Louis fans feel like the trade is tilted a little more in their favor. Either way, these guys are people, and messing with their heads like this really accomplishes nothing. (end of rant).

I basically agree ... but will add that this was reported in the weeks immediately after the trade, too.
