Spring Training 2015

The only reason I can see making sense to basically penny pinch (given what MLB salaries are these days) on Russell (or Wandy for that matter) is if 2-4 million were to be needed to get something done with Olivera. But if that is the case it sounds more like poor planning previously on our part, esp. given the 3 million we gave to Callaspo.

Stat that really made me smile:

19 hits
ONE strikeout

Also noted that Ryan Kelly was called up for the day: no outs, four hits, one walk, four rus allowed.
Thanks for playing.

MLBTR:

"Here’s the latest on the Rockies’ sudden release of Jhoulys Chacin, a key part of their rotation for most of the last five seasons.

Four teams have shown interest in Chacin, who the Rockies released over the weekend, 1500ESPN’s Darren Wolfson tweets. (The Twins, who are in Wolfson’s market, are not among them.)
The release of Chacin helps clear the way for less experienced pitchers like Jon Gray, Eddie Butler, Christian Bergman and David Hale, MLB.com’s Thomas Harding writes. Of course, Chacin himself is just 27, but manager Walt Weiss says the Rockies can’t worry about whether they cut bait too early. “You can’t get caught up in that,” he says. “It’s happened probably thousands of times in the history of this game, and it’s going to happen thousands more. It comes down to, are you willing to make a baseball decision based on where you’re at, at that point in time?” Harding also notes that the Rockies have an insurance option in John Lannan, who agreed to a minor-league deal with the team in November."

@BillShanks: Fredi Gonzalez just said on Baseball Tonight that he expects Mike Minor back in mid-May or early-June.

We are definitely on the same page that Spring Training performance should be used cautiously. It means more than nothing though. I think there is a legitimate chance he is released. I don't believe he has any trade value given his contract. He is competing to be the long man out of the bullpen and slated to make $2,425,000. His Steamer projections for ERA and FIP are 3.96 and 4.14, respectively. I think the decision comes down to how the club evaluates Cody Martin in a long relief role, and how the overall health and effectiveness looks on Minor and Folty over the next week. Releasing Russell and using Martin as the long man saves $1.3m.

Afraid I feel just the opposite. Given the questions about when Folty or Banuelos will be ready to fill a full-time rotation spot (not to mention the IP limits the organization likely has set for both), I don't think there's any way they don't keep Martin stretched out - even if it's in Gwinnett. Wandy and/or Wang could break down any time, and Stults is an absolute wild card IF they keep him. I can't imagine they want to HAVE to put Folty or Manny in the rotation before they force them to, and neither has done enough to do that yet IMO. I can't imagine saving a little over $1 million will cause Hart to speed up either of their timetables given the number of guys we brought in who would make substantially more than younger options - Callaspo, Young, KJ, etc. - this spring if the kids needed more seasoning.

It's important to remember that they've already budgeted for the eventuality that they'll have to pay all the highest salaries PLUS potential bonuses of every player in camp AND apparently have enough money left to be toying with throwing another $10+ million at Olivera - they're not likely to do anything that could remotely get in the way of the development of the youngsters to win a few more games in 2015 or 2016.

Folty has a good arm, but he's not ready for the Atlanta rotation

Yeah, I hate overreacting to spring training performances, but command has been a consistent issue for Foltynewicz. And while I'm generally in favor of letting the youngsters get their heads beaten in for a while at the big league level, especially in a rebuilding year, there are cascade effects from a crummy starting pitching performance that you don't see from an 0-4 day from a young hitter.

All Folty has is velocity. His fastball has no movement or deception. Reminiscent of Kyle Davies. And his command is awful. He was not the guy I wanted in the trade. Looks like a reliever.

Tough day for Folty. Even a couple of the outs were on hard hit balls. 2.2 IP, 5H, 2HR, 2BB (including one to the pitcher), 4K.

Looking at his full body of work this Spring and the command concerns coming into camp, he seems like an extreme longshot to make the rotation out of camp and may need significant time in the minors this year. Given that, we may not be in a position to trade away any of our depth.

Decent showing for Banuelos. 5 baserunners over 3 IP, but the best part was that he was hitting 93-94 on the gun. Velocity was more around 90-91 first time I saw him.
