I've only been able to watch a few at bats this year, but his balance seems way better than last year. I don't consider his swing "out of control" except when he overswings and loses balance. Maybe it's been worse than I have seen. Nobody is naive enough to think he will hit .400, but is it really unreasonable to hope for .275 with 50 walks?
The two biggest weaknesses I see on our projected roster currently are (1) 6th / 7th inning reliever, and (2) LHH platoon partner with Gomes and 5th place hitter.
On the bullpen front, we really miss Shae Simmons. We can hide one or two guys in a 7 man pen by giving them low-leverage innings, but we need someone to confidently put out there in key 7th inning situations when Johnson / Grilli / Kimbrel needs a day off. If that guy is on our roster, he hasn't shown himself yet.
On LF, Gomes should be at least okay against LHP, but we have no yin to his yang. KJ may well be the favorite to fill this role and is projected to do something like this w/ below average defense: 225 / 300 / 365.
I'm really hoping Hart and Coppy are on the prowl for external options for these two roles. It's likely that some other teams' cast-offs are better than our current options.

This is what I HOPE we see (based on what I think Fredi WOULD do, so it's a mix) -
Jace 2B
Young CF
Markakis RF
Freeman 1B
Gomes LF / Terdo LF
Johnson 3B / KJ 3B
Simmons SS
Bethancourt C
/ Terdo, / KJ, A.J. (would do Buck, but that isn't happening), Ciriaco (probably going to be Callaspo), Cunningham
Teheran
Wood
Miller
Wandy
Martin
Kimbrel
Grilli
Russell
Johnson
Avilan
Vizcaino
Kohn
I really hope that Fredi platoons CJ.
Can I still pray we go with Perez instead of this Eric Young farce in center field?
"Prayer and arsenic will kill a cow."
So...I should murder a cow?

I'd be fine with Young as the 25th guy, but he'll get exposed if he's expected to do more.
I think Young deserves a chance to start the season as the opening day starter. If you tell someone it's an open competition and then they perform well in spring training and you don't give them the job what message are you sending to them and the team? If he starts to struggle you can always go with someone else but he's had a great spring, let him start the year with the job.
