Spring Training 2015

@KevinMcAlpin: #Braves announce catcher John Buck has retired to spend time with his family.

Uggla had a great spring with us last year. Didn't amount to much. The only thing that really looks different is the Ks. Part of me wants him to do well cause he obviously tried, and it wasn't his fault if he had an undiagnosed condition.

I agree and it is only Spring Training, but what stands out is he looks better defensively and at the plate. Which certainly seems to suggest he had undiagnosed condition effecting him that the Braves missed.

He hasn't ever been good defensively, so I don't think that was something the Braves missed.

I didn't say that, I said he has looked better defensively too. In other words, he is not misplaying all the balls he had been misplaying before hand. He seems to be seeing the ball better on both sides.

It's funny how his one consistent strength for us was an eye at the plate. Guess it was really just blind luck.

...

Don't look now, but Dan Uggla has struck out 4 times in 37 plate appearances, and is hitting .310/.459/.590 with a couple dingers.

I cannot believe this ****. And whoever our team ophthalmologist has been the last 5-7 years needs to be cut quicker than a 28 year old single A pitcher who is wilder than a truckload of starving kangaroos. How do we not figure this crap out? And why didn't Grissom say something sooner? Oculomoter dysfunction. Jesus Christ.

If this turns out to be legit—and certainly, that remains to be seen—it's an epic, embarrassing fail. Uggla seemed like a guy with an eye problem, and there was some discussion about it when he started wearing his contacts during games. In contrast to, say, Melvin, who had janky mechanics from the get-go, Uggla didn't have a crazy hitch or flaw in his swing. He just looked like he couldn't see the ****ing ball, ever . . . ducking under breaking pitches over the plate, taking middling fastballs down the middle, missing everything by two feet. It seems like a few thousands of dollars' worth of testing—going the extra mile to ensure that there wasn't a medical reason for his falloff—would have been worthwhile for a guy whom we still had to pay $30M or so. If we end up paying him eight figures to be a reliable contributor to the Nats I think I'm going to jump off a bridge.

Imagine if we had a healthy visioned Dan Uggla down the stretch all those years we needed someone who could do exactly what he does.
