Spring Training 2015

Bowman is clueless. I'm fine with giving Wandy the ball every 5 days for a month hoping we found another Harang (at half the size!)

Wandy also comes at 3 million cheaper than Harang would've cost us. I believe that Wandy will do at least as good as Harang does this year in Philly. Further, I even expect Wandy to do better than Harang but Harang may eat more innings, etc.

If by "etc" you mean "Harang may eat more innings, and more everything else," then you are absolutely right.

I have never been a particular fan of Chris Johnson. I was disappointed that the Braves cut bait on the plat soon with CJ and El Juan Chubbard so quickly. I hated the extension, and I ground along with everyone else at his performance last year.

That said, I think that Gov's case for his high side is probably about right. Last year, he just swung at ERRYTHING. He actually has a nice, uncomplicated line drive swing. If he would take a first strike once in a while and get back to his career norms for K/BB, he's could be a slightly-above average ML regular. Not panty-peeling prospect, sure, but in the year One AM (After Mukaki)...palatable.

Zackly. As awful as he was last year, that's about how good he was in '13. A line drive machine. If he has another 4/25 BB/K ratio, I'd hold the match while y'all light your torches. He won't.

And I won't belabor the point, but I've watched the guy for a couple years now, and his defense isn't as bad as the metrics say. Like Chipper, he makes the barehanded play. Turns outs into outs. Rarely turns singles and doubles into outs. His range is short. That's why he plays third. His reactions are fine. Throws well.

Finally, he's a bit of an asshole, which I like. Too many passive guys the last few years. You need somebody to beat the **** out of the Gatorade bucket once in a while. And hell, for you guys who hate Fredi, there's always the chance Johnson will do something stupid and Fredi will bleed out with a shard of bat stuck in his larynx or something. So he's got that going for him.

Well, this sucks.

@KevinMcAlpin: #Braves made next round of cuts this AM: Manny Banuelos, Williams Perez & Eury Perez. Roster now at 39.

@mlbbowman
With Perez out of the mix, Cunningham's roster bid improves because of the need to have at least one backup who could play CF.

@mlbbowman
But the Braves are still looking at all options. They'll test Gosselin's versatility by playing him in CF today.

The idea of Gosselin in CF is ridiculous. Cunningham is a good option. Not sure what the organization has against him, but he keeps earning a spot and not getting it.

No kidding. I'm not sure what the org thinks they have in Gosselin. I mean, there's virtue in a reliable utility guy, but they might be mistaking Mike Mordecai for Omar Infante here.

I hate the idea of running Gosselin into CF, but he isn't the guy keeping Perez or Cunningham off the roster . . . that's Callaspo.

(edit: or, yannow, EY.)

Good point.

I like how people are talking about him "surging" after a slow start. He's had one good year and two adequate years his whole career. Surging isn't something he does. His career average is about the best we can hope for.

At least EY had the decency to earn his spot.

If they're entertaining Gosselin as the CF backup, that's a pretty good indication that EY is going to play everyday.

As for Perez, he did have some defensive miscues this Spring and a reputation for inconsistent fundamentals on defense. It's just weird to see him get cut w/ over a week to go. I was really hoping to see what he could do against LHP. 900 OPS at AAA. Only had 9 ABs this spring against LHP, but this is what he put up: 333 / 455 / 556.
