Spring Training 2015

But, but ... I thought John cared about the 'fickle fanbase'.

Good lord, get your theories straight.

So you believe that Brady Feigl sells less tickets than James Russell???

I'm done, this isn't even remotely interesting anymore. You guys *itch about the great James Russell all you want.

"Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2015, James Russell threw 5,051 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2009 and 2014, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, Spring Training and Fall/Winter Ball. In 2014, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (90mph), Sinker (90mph) and Slider (82mph), also mixing in a Change (82mph), Cutter (88mph) and Curve (76mph)."

Topping out at 88 this late in camp - ESPECIALLY when he's been throwing more pitches because he was "competing" for a rotation spot - is a red flag.

Actually, it shows that he has pulled back from max effort to focus on stretching out and building stamina. No starting pitcher throws as hard on a regular basis as a starter as they do/would as a reliever.

Yeah. Cause we're the ones bitching here.

Pitchfx is showing that as an average velocity.

About releasing James Russell? Yup.

No, you COMPLETELY missed the point.

I don't think anybody really gives a **** about Russell.

But the move is indicative of a lack of consistency with respect to how the organization is rebuilding.

Russell is a pawn in the game. Everybody gets that.

I think it has more to do with the hypocrisy of fans that believe the Braves can do no wrong. Its a good point that a guy in spring training stretching his arm out to be a starter certainly isnt going to meet his velocity as a reliever. Even so, we arent talking about a huge difference.

The hypocrisy lies when its defended when a vet is acquired bc "they are going to trade him for parts jn 3 months" yet when a vet is released its bc "he has no value".

Russell should land on his feet somewhere as the last man in someone's bullpen at league minimum. But I think it's clear now that 0 out of 30 teams valued him at $2.4m in this market.

I'm not sure about that. It's clear that the Braves had to make a decision before opening day and didn't have time to negotiate with 30 teams.

Pretty damn sure if given time the Braves could've swallowed the buyout in a trade and got some attention. Russell at less than two million is pretty good. Could've grabbed a prospect at least.

Saving the money to sign someone like Moacada or Olivera is a great move. Would make sense that this was the Braves plan all along.

Yeah, that's spot on.

I don't really care about Russell, per se, particularly if they're freeing up cash to get someone to fill another hole. Still, I think gf has a worthwhile point.

I think there's no point in rushing Feigl if they think he's going to be a worthwhile piece going forward. He's never pitched above A ball, right? If he's ready to contribute when Luis arm starts to get all tingly, great. If not, he's in the pen next year.

Perhaps I'm naive as to how these things work, but I would be very surprised and disappointed if we didn't try to move Russell for nothing before releasing him. Any front office group that would not be willing to do the leg work on something like that does not deserve a leadership role in the league.

At any rate, if there's a suggestion that Russell's market value is $2.4m right now, I'm anxious to take the other side of that bet.

There is zero reason to starts anyone's clock this year before June.

Agreed. If you recall I named Feigl as one to watch before ST, I like him a lot but rushing him in a rebuild year isn't wise IMO. But I am not confident they know what they're doing, esp. since Fredi now clearly has more say.
