Perhaps I'm naive as to how these things work, but I would be very surprised and disappointed if we didn't try to move Russell for nothing before releasing him. Any front office group that would not be willing to do the leg work on something like that does not deserve a leadership role in the league.
At any rate, if there's a suggestion that Russell's market value is $2.4m right now, I'm anxious to take the other side of that bet.
CJ with a homer and a single today.
Um, Caratini was a pretty decent prospect for us at a position of need. Not exactly spare parts?
I'm actually reasonably optimistic about Johnson. He seems to have established a rapport with Roger, who presumably has some extra insight for sinkerballing RPs.
Russell has some value, but at that salary it probably would have cut his suitors by half... At least
I much rather bet on Russell continuing his track record than betting on Jim Johnson to bounce back.
I was lukewarm on the Jim Johnson acquisition, but he seems to be off to a good start so far this year, and it concerns me to say that he is probably our 3rd best RP right now.
There's certainly a chance that Russell will outperform his 4 FIP projection this year in a low leverage role and pull his weight as a league minimum guy, but I'd give JJ the edge to perform better and be a more valuable commodity at the trade deadline.
I think it has more to do with the hypocrisy of fans that believe the Braves can do no wrong. Its a good point that a guy in spring training stretching his arm out to be a starter certainly isnt going to meet his velocity as a reliever. Even so, we arent talking about a huge difference.
The hypocrisy lies when its defended when a vet is acquired bc "they are going to trade him for parts jn 3 months" yet when a vet is released its bc "he has no value".
I really like Miller. Besides his FIRST outing of ST, he's been absolute money.

Braves did real well with both the Upton/Heyward deals for sure. I'm starting to worry about the Gattis deal though. Folty is not close to being ready yet. Hopefully Ruiz has a solid year.
Miller is going to be real good for the Braves for the next four years and hopefully they will have the money to extent him soon.
None of the fans you refer to have ever stated a belief that "the front office can do no wrong" - there are quite a few who have rather loudly voiced disagreements with their actions at times - sending Eury Perez out, keeping Stults in the rotation over Martin, and others.
The hypocrisy is that message board posters don't think the guys that get paid to run the club don't investigate whether or not they can get something of value back for a player before simply releasing him. I hate to break it to some of you, but the vast majority of these scenarios have been brought up, discussed, and decided upon LONG before we react to them on the internet.
NO ONE here is smarter than these guys (not just Braves' front office personnel, but throughout the game), I promise you. The evidence lies in the fact that we're (myself included) here talking about it instead of getting paid to make that decision.
