Spring Training 2015

Was in response to Carp who mentioned 16

I get that... now. I assumed we'd be at best quasi competitive in 16 like we are now. Hats off to Hart by the way for making me believe we have even a slight chance of competing for the wildcard this season.

In 17 though I think we're in reasonable position to make a move.

You just said in the post above that we wouldn't be able to find any offense for $27M.... So what offense are we going to find without it?

Read it again. I said, what offense are we going to get that we can't already get without trading Kimbrell and BJ?

We already have plenty of room left in the budget (more actually with the Uggla deal ending) to make a good splash in the FA market or trade market. There will/should be lot of semi affordable CF/OF options in next yrs FA. Fowler, Austin Jackson, Span, Cespedes, and Stubbs. Even some older players who could rebound like Quentin, Victorino, and Venable. We can afford any of these guys without getting rid of Kimbrell and BJ's contracts.

Totally disagree. He is an arm injury away from becoming worthless during the remainder of his contract. We're not competing for the next two years. We will need to acquire some offense either via trade or FA if we want to compete by 2017

So is every other pitcher in baseball.

As currently constructed, you're probably right. But we still don't know what the 2016 team will like. We don't need stars at every position offensively. Just competent hitters who aren't automatic outs. Hopefully Peterson and Pereza are legit, which would help, combined with improvement from Simmons. Then make a trade or a FA signing for a decent hitter, and it starts to look like a decent offense to match a very good pitching staff.

It seems likely that we'll be looking for a corner outfielder next off-season, but I'm expecting that CF with Smith/Perez should be fine. Smith looked very good both in Arizona Fall League and Spring Training, he's looking like he'll be ready for 2016. Perez at the very least should be a fine back-up or someone who can play vs lefties. What we could use next year is someone like Cespedes but I doubt he ends up here.

Every pitcher is an arm injury away from being worthless. We're going to need a closer in 2017, and he's still going to be the best one available.

You've already proven that you don't even know anything about half the players on our team this year so not sure if your opinion matters much.

Exactly.
Also show me the teams with stud hitters/defenders at every position. We don't need to replace every single player that isn't good.

Braves need a long term option at CF/LF/3B. The rest is fine. Braves have a lot of interesting options for both 3B/CF. Somehow they have to find a way to get a good hitting left fielder.

Ideally, sure. But most teams don't have long-term locks at EVERY position.

Olney picks us as second to worst team in MLB. Only ahead of Philly.

I don't think we will be THAT bad, but it isn't going to be pretty. Bring on the high draft picks!

If you give me a scrappy guy that can get on base on play good defense out there I'm fine.

A scenario could arise where you end up putting Peterson in LF. Peraza at 2B. Smith at CF. Ruiz at 3B. But, all four of those guys are not going to work out so I think LF will have to come externally.

I'm nervous about the 4/5 spots in the rotation. That is whats really going to hurt us more than anything.
