Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Medlen has a right forearm strain. He'll be further evaluated on Monday

Thanks for the info.

Sometimes strains are...just strains, right? Cuz anytime I see a pitcher (especially a Brave) get any type of injury, I can't help but plan for the worst :Alone:

We'll make a move. We always do. Once teams start figuring out their rotation players will become available. Milone in Oakland looks to be an odd man out. Josh Tomlin and Marcum in Cleveland, maybe our pal Bruce Chen in KC.

None will be Medlen's caliber, but we'll make due with what we have.

If Milone doesn't make their rotation, they will use him in the pen (that is one of their weaknesses), or they will keep him around in AAA for depth. Chen is an interesting option. Could use him in the rotation and bullpen. Had a very good year in 2013. Making less than Floyd.

A forearm strain can be a nagging injury all year, but it is much better than an elbow problem.

Right forearm strain could mean a number of things. It is a stay tuned till further examination kind of diagnosis.

It could (though I hope it isn't) be one of those things to not make you look too desperate while searching for a trade.

Hale looked really good to me last year. Don't mind him getting a shot at all

One average the eighth starter gets about 10 starts. So the guys in AAA were likely to come into play anyhow. Hale is the best of the group. But Thomas, Martin, Schlosser and Maya could potentially see significant major league action too. Not all of them, but one or two of them.

At the start of the season, teams will not give up one of their top 5 starters. They will even be reluctant to give up their sixth starter. The kind of deal that might be made (and I'm talking very hypothetically here given we don't really know Medlen's status) is where a team has an injury or other issue that creates a need on their major league team. They might be willing to give up a sixth starter in that situation to fill that need.

Once teams start falling out of contention, the supply of pitching available goes up. But so does demand as contending team's suffer attrition to their starting rotations. It is hard to say whether starting pitching is easier to pick up in June than in March. My guess is it is a bit easier in June.

Not if it's only a strain.

That still means that at best he is going to miss most/all of April. He basically will need to go through ST again once he is able to throw another pitch. And a high percentage of pitchers who go on the DL for a forearm strain do it a couple of times during the year--it is a nagging injury, like most strains. Still much better than the alternative, but not good by any means.

With the big contracts given out we need to develop cheap players to fill in the gaps. We could be losing a star player giving up that pick. Do we need another starter? Sure, but unless its an ace I don't think that extra pitcher will make much if any difference.

Bowman - "No, you never want to hear forearm strain and will be further evaluated...not a good combo." (answering a question regarding whether or not he thought Medlen would be okay)

Yeah, they're not out of the woods yet, everybody should probably hold on until an MRI is performed and we know more. Even I'm not mistaken that was the original diagnosis with Tim Hudson a few years back and it turned much worse than that. It just didn't look good.
