Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

The injuries to Medlen and Beachy make me even more leery of signing any pitcher to a multi year deal.

I have no basis for making this claim but I feel like if you don't have arm injuries in your early 20's then you are a safe bet to be healthy for the majority of your career.

He's been really good before though.
I don't want it to get in the way of signing Heyward long term.
But IMO he'd be a good guy to have around for another 3-4 years. I just have a hunch he's one of those guys who will pitch very, VERY well here.

I think the only reason Heyward isn't here long term is that the two sides can't agree on the dollars. I really do believe that the Braves payroll is going to be in the 130 range when they are in the new stadium.

Good to hear. Glad he isn't having to get the rust off. I haven't watched much of him pitch, but I am looking forward to it. Solid arm that can eat innings.

Santana did have an arm injury in his early 20's. Partially torn UCL.

Tyler Greene missed a grounder on the next to last play of the game, although they ruled it a hit. Then Recker hit one about 2 miles off some guy I've never heard of who got on the Braves bus by mistake and managed to pitch the 9th.

Which is why I don't take spring training W/L that seriously.

We should've traded for Price without trading a current rotation member.

We should have signed Hudson for 11 mil to be our #5 or 6.

We should've have signed Santana for 14 mil to potentially be out #5.

We should've predicted the Tigers would give Fister away for peanuts and cracker jack.

There really weren't that many options. I think Floyd was a solid option as our #6 or 7 guy. That's quality depth. I believe Hale is quality depth.

That would have resulted in the Braves having an opening day payroll of about $120M this year so there were no realistic options available to the Braves to have the kind of depth that guys like Dalyn are bitching about.

Take a chill pill dude. I'm a very optimistic person when it comes to the Braves. I never said there was someone better for the job out there. I simply made a comment expressing concern about David Hale based on his career, using numbers to back my concern up. I didn't say he was going to suck, I said the numbers support him being very mediocre to bad in the Majors over the course of a whole season. Am I not allowed to be concerned or talk about why I'm concerned on a FORUM which discusses these things? Optimism? Lol... I am still one of BJ and Ugglas best supporters and you talk about me being negative. You need to calm your emotions and drink a beer or something. I'm sorry I ever expressed concern or wanted to facilitate discussion using actual numbers.

Sorry to go off on you but I'm tired of seeing the same posts over and over again about how ****ty the Braves rotation will be this season and how it's all Frank Wren's fault for not trading for David Price, signing Ervin Santana earlier, keeping Tim Hudson and being activitely prepared for Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to suffer season ending injuries and for Mike Minor to deal with shoulder soreness.

B.J. Upton has had a good spring and his swing looks much better but I think the lack of power has to be a concern. Every hit I've seen him get has been singles with most of them being ground balls. I've yet to see him drive the ball.

Santana looked decent for it to be his first live action of spring training. He gave up a few hard hit balls but luckily they were right at people so the damage was minimum.

Justin Upton looks to be getting his swing straightened out after having a slow start to his spring. Hit a long homerun the other day against the Yankees and today hit about 900 feet worth of fly ball outs.

Not a single person has said any of that. What is ridiculous is how much you guys exaggerate.

Breaking down the Thursday box.

Some folks ever put Pfisterererrerer on their prospects list. Sometimes you don't need a big sample size.

Santana was strong during his two innings (two hits, one run).

A couple of irrelevant pitchers (Bromberg, Pfisterererrerer) allowed most of the Mets' offense.

Strong innings from Carpenter and Cornely (who has been a pleasant surprise this spring)

Severino (one IP,1 hit, 2 K) is somehow still in camp. Perhaps he is the owner of the Fredii photos.

Mejia 1-3, BB, HR (2nd), RBI, again he can do no more yet he has no place to play in ATL

BJ 2-4, RBI, .295

JUp 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI
Gosselin 1-1, R (.395) why exactly did he get dropped from the 40-man

Pena 1-3, R, RBI (.395)

Through my rose colored glasses I see Santana finishing with a sub 3 ERA this year. Move to the national league with elite defenders at 2 key positions and a good helping of luck(luck balances out right?) and by the end of the year people will be complaining that we didnt sign him long term when we had the chance.

(1) Pfisterer is an interesting prospect, but I agree. He was a 15th round pick out of high school, pitched four years at Duke, went undrafted, Braves signed him as a free agent. He ate up the SAL (which he should have as a four-year college player). Curious to see what they do with him. My guess is he starts in Lynchburg.

(2) Cornely is an interesting prospect. Throws mid-90s and has done well at each of his first three pro stops. He starts in Mississippi and continues to progress as a player, he may be in our bullpen at some point in 2014.

(3) On Gosselin, I guess they had to make room for Mejia on the 40-man. I hope Gosselin can hit like he did in college. He wouldn't be a bad 25th guy if he did.

You keep saying that Frank Wren didn't properly prepare the team to be able to sustain injuries in the rotation. I asked you last night to explain what you would have done given the Braves budget and you didn't answer the question.

I did say that. And THAT is nothing like your post. And I didn't answer because I've answered that question about ten or fifteen times already.
