Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

If Floyd is expected back in late April now, I wonder if money and what the Braves see in Gus Schlosser could be why they're waiting on Garcia. They might be leaning towards Gus in the long man bullpen role and don't see a spot for Garcia when Floyd is expected back. If so they could save money and go with Gus for a few starts, then move him to the bullpen when Santana returns. Just a thought, it could also be that is still being debated among other moves.
 
Juan Francisco joins Jeff Francoeur as ex-Braves looking for work. Tommy Hansen coming up next. Anybody see a fit here?

Who'd we get for Juan? We certainly "won" the Hansen trade, Frenchy was a wash, Ryan Church didn't do squat.

Francisco is having a monster spring again too, he's hitting .346 with 3 HR's and a 1.231 OPS. Interestingly, Overbay who they went with over Francisco has did nothing, hitting .119 so far this spring. But Overbay is a true first baseman while Francisco isn't. Plus they mostly want Overbay for defense apparently as they signed Reynolds for the offense at first.

As far as who we got for Juan, we got a lefty reliever that walks everyone. Nothing basically, I expect the Brewers to do better once they trade him given his strong spring. Also, that is too bad about Hanson if it's a given Texas will let him go. Hanson has had a bad spring I see, so looks like that is a given. I don't see him being a fit for us outside of maybe a minor league deal (meaning to pitch in AAA if he cannot find a better deal elsewhere).

They probably opted for the better defender over Francisco. They also have Mark Reynolds, who will probably get the majority of the time at 1st base. So Overbay probably won out because of his defense and now the Braves have no place for Juan.
 
Breaking down the SUNDAY box, 4-1 win over Mets

Yes, the Braves have played their two best games of the spring back to back...

A Simmons error (his 4th of the spring!) led to only Met run.

Garcia worked 5.1 IP, allowing 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 4 K

Buchter finished inning after allowing walk, then BULPEN RETIRED 14 STRAIGHT!!!

Thomas, Carpenter, Kimbrel work 1-2-3 innings, Kimbrel getting only K

BJ 2-3, 3B, R, BB

JUp 4th HR of spring

Freeman 2-3, RBI, BB (.375)

CJ RBI 2B (6th double of spring!)

Simmons 2B, RBI

It was great to see BJ finally drive a ball in the air like that triple he hit to RF today. BJ has looked so much better this spring than at any point last year.

The key might be that the Braves won't need the No. 5 guy for two weeks. I'll wager Schlosser makes his first start at gwinnett, and Braves start year with extra BP arm.

The guys that are starters have been hitting well this spring and Justin has had a great week. The reason the Braves haven't been scoring many runs is because today is the first time Fredi has put the whole lineup on the field together (minus Gattis).

That's certainly part of the consideration, and Fredi has already announced his plans to carry an extra bullpen arm. I am just not sure about the hold up on Garcia and their plans with Schlosser at this point. It could be all that is still being debated was my main point. I still expect Garcia to make the team in the end.

LHP Thomas Keeling, who was aptly described by Braves1976.

Church was the darling of some, who thought him better than Francoeur, but I always thought that was a style over substance debate. Neither of them ever did much. Francoeur stuck around longer, but I always thought he was just about the dumbest player ever.

I don't know what is quite "wrong" with Francisco. Has to be something because there are worse players getting paid then him.

He still strikes out a lot and the Brewers tried converting him into a first baseman and that didn't work out. He is okay to spot start there, but playing him regularly at first was a bad idea. Francisco is also a bad pinch hitter so not someone you want coming off the bench.

If the team makes any decision based on Floyd returning in late April, they are insane.

Isn't tomorrow the day we have to pay Freddy if he's still on the roster? If so Fredi's just following the company line, a decision hasn't been made, but it will be made soon. If sure Franks's working the phone's impossible to tell if he'll get a deal done.

They won the '91 series, and cheated with the airconditioning. Shouldn't that be enough?

They can bury Hrbek next to Eric Gregg.
