Spring Training Thread

I can't imagine the radio guys know anything more than the honey baked ham rumors.. I don't think I have seen Shew on defense yet.. so I don't know how he rates. CJ, what is your minor league expertise on him.

My minor league expertise unfortunately is limited to looking at scouting reports and stats, so I’d be lying if I told you I knew anything about his defense. But there’s no question the scouting reports have changed, from him having a shot to stick at shortstop when he was drafted to now where the consensus is he will have zero issues sticking at shortstop.

Just looking back at a few - Kiley McDaniel and Keith Law both wrote in February that he’s an above average defender at SS.

It’s delicious. Phillies home park and it’s packed.

You know they are like: “man… why do THESE bastards have to be in our division ….”
Hehhehehe

The OF depth battle is interesting at least. You've got a bunch of guys performing with White (1.500 OPS), Hilliard (.971 OPS), and Dean (1.079 OPS) all performing well. You've even got Ozuna (.831), Pillar (.820 OPS), and Forrest Wall (.893 OPS) putting up solid numbers and now Luplow has been on base three of his first 6 PAs. On the flip side, you have Rosario with an OPS in the .200s.

I'm assuming Ozuna and Rosario will start the season on the roster almost no matter what. Guessing that Hilliard gets a spot because a) he is performing b) has clear untapped potential and c) is out of options. Wonder who gets the other spot. White? Luplow? Adrianza? Pillar? Also wonder how many of those guys are on contracts such that they can opt out if they don't make the team vs. how many we can stash in AAA as bench depth.

Interesting little tidbit: on the Braves website if you sort stats by 'Outfielders', Ozuna doesn't show up in the filter. Hopefully that is a sign that he is considered a non-option in the outfield this year.

Dylan Dodd starting. Chip and Ben Ingram talking very highly of Braden Shewmake and even said he has interested himself into the SS battle. Not sure I buy that, but he’s playing short and leading off today. Just made a great play in the six hole in the first inning.

Chipper is commentating again?

Wow, Elder and Ian Anderson both optioned to Triple A just now. We know Allard is going to start the year on the IL, Soroka likely as well.

So it’s basically down to Shuster or Dodd for the fifth starter?

Looks like it.

Should the braves think about trading 1 of these guys? Maybe a defensive SS or just trade for some younger prospects.

Maybe for prospects but we wouldn’t get a better SS than the group we have now with either of those two. And it would be foolish to trade our depth away with 60 year old Morton and wright hurting to start season.

I'm sure others have seen him a lot..I have 6 times I estimate. He can play short. He's average most nights and won't kill you and on some nights he's picking it like he's Andrelton. I'd still gamble on Grissoms bat and him him not butchering everything early on. I liken Shewmake to Jeff Blauser...right before Blauser got good. That's not bad..but it was..eh. That being said..I liked Shewmakes bat "potential" more than I did his glove. (I didn't think Dana was right saying he'd add strength - homerun type). But I always thought his glove was good enough.

Interesting because all the guff when he was drafted was that he’d HAVE to Move off ss

I believe that was striker pouting about that?
