ST Game Thread: March 1st: Baltimore (0-0) @ Atlanta (0-0)

I wonder if Oliver's single was one of his typical "fooled by a breaking ball lunging swing that produced a chopper through the 5-6 hole", or a legit hard hit ball.

if I remember correctly, the box score said single on a line drive.. but I haven't seen video or know for sure.

I think he showed bunt then drew back and hit it up the middle. It wasn't a dribbler buy didn't seem like a line drive either.

From AP:

The crowd gasped and applauded when Braves reliever Mauricio Cabrera reached 100 and 101 mph with several pitches in the ninth inning. "It's not only 100 miles an hour but it's pretty easy," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of the 22-year-old right-hander. "And he's got other pitches that he throws along with it, which is encouraging."

I wonder if he got some glasses that have a skull and bones on the cross piece in the offseason?

Perez is a right hander, isn't he?

I think I'll find ST more interesting than a lot of the first half of the actual season. I'm interested in seeing what our new top prospects look like.

I guess you'll have to wait for a TV game, eh?

Nice work from the pen, and nice comeback from the bats.

I know we aren't competing, but I will relish any win we gather this year.

Any chance Daniel Castro makes the team? I had forgotten about him, but he's hard to root against.

It was largely against minor leaguers, but the arms competing for the last couple spots in the bullpen pitched very well today with the exception of Burawa.

Spring training means next to nothing, but here's hoping Ruiz has a solid spring. I don't know if he'll start the season by repeating a level in Mississippi, but I expect he'll be in Gwinnett at some point in 2016.

Mauricio Cabrera is one of those guys that if he gets just a little command of that fastball he could be in Atlanta in no time. The kind of guy who can go from mediocre minor league stats to overpowering dominance quickly. He may never put it together but has closer stuff if he does.

I think he's squeezed out by the veteran signings, but I think he'll play his way onto the team at some point during the season. He made me a fan last year.

Quite the analysis from Fredi there. He throws another pitch, who would have thunk? I didn't realize it until Fredi brought this up, but Glavine threw fastballs, I thought he only threw changeups.

I remember when Kimbrel had control issues in the minors. The next year he was in post season games when our closer went down.

Maybe Cabrera could surprise and do the same, minus post season of course.

I remember watching Kimbrel pitch when he first came up. It was instantly apparent that his control issues came from his mechanics getting out of whack and being unable to repeat the same delivery. When his mechanics were smooth he was dominating. I knew it was only a matter of time until Kimbrel ironed things out.

I'm not sure what Cabrera's issues are. Hopefully something similarly fixable that he'll iron out.
